Miss Marple Tells a Story

I don't think I've ever told you my dears - you, Raymond, and you, Joan, about the rather curious little business that happened some years ago now. I don't want to see vain in any way - of course I know that in comparison with you young people I'm not clever at all - Raymond writes those very modern books all about rather unpleasant young men and women - and Joan paints those very remarkable pictures of square people with curious bulges on them - very clever of you, my dear, but as Raymond always says (only quite kindly, because he is the kindest of nephews) I am hopelessly Victorian. Mr. Alma-Tadema and Mr. Frederic Leighton and I suppose to you they seem hopelessly vieux jeu. Now let me see, that was I saying? Oh, yes - that I didn't want to appear vain - but I couldn't help being just a teeny weenie bit pleased with myself, because, just by applying a little common sense, I believe I really did solve a problem that had baffled cleverer heads than mine. Though really I should have thought the whole thing was obvious from the beginning. ...

Well, I'll tell you my little story, and if you think I'm inclined to be conceited about it, you must remember that I did at least help a fellow creature who was in very grave distress.

The first I knew of this business was one evening about nine o'clock when Gwen (you remember Gwen? My little maid with red hair) well - Gwen came in and told me that Mr. Petherick and a gentleman had called to see me. Gwen had shown them into the drawing-room - quite rightly. English or American?

«... Standard English must always strike an American as a bit stilted and precious. Its vocabulary is less abundant than his own, it has lost to an appreciable extent its old capacity for bold metaphor and in pronunciation and spelling it seems to him to be extremely uncomfortable and not a little ridiculous. When he hears a speech in its Oxford (or Public School) form he must be a Bostonian to avoid open mirth. He believes, on very plausible grounds, that American is better on all counts - clearer, more rational and, above all, more charming. And he holds not illogically that there is no reason under the sun why a dialect spoken almost uniformly by nearly 180,000,000 people should yield anything to the dialect of a small minority in a nation of 50,000,000. He sees that wherever American and this dialect come into fair competition - as in Canada, for example, or in the Far East - American tends to prevail, and that even in England many of its reforms and innovations are making steady headway, so he concludes that it will probably prevail everywhere hereafter...» (p. 85-86)

Parliamentary Elections in Britain

«...In 1887 the Representation of the People Act extended the franchise by adding nearly a million voters to the electorate. The right to vote still depended on a property qualification, and women remained completely excluded from the franchise. The secret ballot was introduced by the Ballot Act 1872 and, under the Corrupt and illegal Practices Act 1883, bribery and other corrupt practices connected with elections became criminal offences. The next extension in the franchise came in 1884 when the Franchise Act reduced the residence qualification to six months and enfranchised the few remaining categories of men who had not previously had the vote. Women for the first time were given the vote: this however was restricted to those ages 30 and over... "» (T.A.Komova, p.9, 10)

Climate

The climate of the British Isles is generally mild and equable. The warm North Atlantic Current (Gulf Stream) heats the sea water and air as it travels from the Atlantic Ocean across the Shelf. This gives the British Isles a more temperate climate than would otherwise be the case. Edinburgh, for example, is 56 north of the equator, the same latitude as Moscow, yet its climate is much milder. The Gulf Stream also influences the shallow coastal waters that are important breeding grounds for various kinds of fish on which the national fishing industry is largely dependent.

Physical relief

Britain's physical relief can be roughly divided into two main regions - Highland and Lowland Britain. The borderline between the two regions is roughly a line from the mouth of river Exe in Devonshire, to the mouth of the Tyne on the north-east coast. To the north-west of the line there stretches high ground which is, however, not continuous, but dispersed with valleys and plains. Historically, this division has been significant for the settlement of people, military conquest, communications, agriculture and industry.

Questions:

1. What is the location of the British Isles?

2. How can the climate of the British Isles be characterized?

3. What regions does Highland Britain / Lowland Britain comprise ?

4. What bird is the national symbol of England?

5. What is the National Trust involved in?

DELIVER US FROM DEBT

...When he was made redundant in 1989 from Pizza Piazza, the fast food chain where he was development manager, Fox decided to set up his own fast food business. Pasta was chosen because there are few, if any, home delivery services of linguine, spaghetti, rigatoni and other variations of the Italians' favorite dish. It is also an increasingly popular food.

'There are now more people in the UK eating pasta but we eat only about seven pounds per person per year compared with ten pounds in the United States and 57 pounds in Italy. '

The concept was to make up pasta dishes with their sauces and deliver them hot by bicycle. Most of the banks Fox approached turned their noses up at the idea. Eventually, his local branch of National Westminster agreed a $72,000 loan of which all but $20,000 is guaranteed under the government's loan guarantee scheme. Fox put in just $3,000 of his own money...

1.Прочитайте первые абзацы статьи «Best-quality education, going cheap» из газеты «The Economist»:

Best-quality education, going cheap

The firm with the strongest balance sheet fired the first salvo, announcing discounts for customers. Other industry leaders quickly followed suit. Regulators, meanwhile, are casting a wary eye for the kind of price-fixing behaviour that has already prompted one lawsuit by the Department of Justice. The software industry? Detroit? No, this is America's elite Ivy League universities.

Princeton, America's richest university, with over $750,000 in endowment for every student, started it earlier this year. It was concerned that its prices were keeping out clever, poorer, kids, so it decided to offer full scholarship for students with family incomes below $40,000, and more aid for those below $90,000. Shortly afterwards, Yale's president, Richard Levin, announced more aid for middle-income families. («The Economist», December 5th 1998)

2. Прочитайте отрывки из статьи «Rings hollow» из того же издания, «The Economist»:

Rings hollow

What better occasion than Valentine's day to ask for your sweetheart's hand? In America, the answer is almost any other. Most love-struck American men are unaware of the perils of proposal. Countless will this weekend go on bended knee and surprise girlfriends with a diamond engagement ring...

When the ring is given might matter too, for some states could let the fiancee keep the ring if she can convince a court that it was an «unconditional» gift, rather than one given in contemplation of marriage. Legal scholars say this is a devilishly tricky point. But one thing is clear. A woman can strengthen the argument that the ring was given unconditionally if she had received it on a traditional gift-giving occasion -such as Valentine's day. («The Economist», February 13th 1999)

1) Прокомментируйте план содержания и план выражения следующих словосочетаний: «love-struck American men», «the perils of proposal», «a devilishly tricky point», «in contemplation of marriage», «an unconditional gift», «a traditional gift-giving occasion».
