«ISSUES OF MULTICULTURALISM AND MULTILINGUALISM IN MODERN EDUCATION SYSTEM»


April 17 – 19, 2008

Dear Colleagues


In 2006 – 2008 Narva College of the University of Tartu is implementing a European Social Fund project Improving the Quality of Multicultural Component in Teacher Training. The project aims at developing professionalism in the field of multicultural and multilingual education and improving the quality of professional activity of teachers in Estonia.


We are pleased to invite you to participate in the international conference on issues of multiculturalism, interculturality and multilingualism, which will take place on April 17 – 19, 2008 in Narva College of the University of Tartu.


The following issues will be discussed:

  • education as an aspect of intercultural dialogue;

  • methods and techniques of multicultural education;

  • the role of education in preserving and developing identity in multicultural society;

  • aspects of conducting a lesson in two languages;

  • developing multiculturalism and tolerance among the participants of educational process;

  • aims and values of teachers in multicultural society, etc.


In order to participate in the conference, please fill in the participation form attached and send it to irena.tsopp@ut.ee by February 15, 2008.

The detailed program of the conference will be sent to registered participants.

The working languages of the conference are Estonian, Russian and English.


We are planning to publish abstracts of presentations before the conference commences and therefore we ask you to send an electronic copy of the abstract of your presentation by March 1, 2008 (file name: article_Author’s surname). In order to publish your article in conference proceedings, please send an electronic copy of the article by March 30, 2008 (file name: article_Author’s surname). Abstracts and articles edited according to the guidelines outlined below should be sent to Irena Tsopp (irena.tsopp@ut.ee).

The editors of conference proceedings reserve the right to edit the articles.

Appendix


1. PAPER FORMATTING GUIDELINES


  1. Articles should be written in English, Russian or Estonian.

  2. The length of an article together with references should not exceed 30 000 characters (spaces included).

  3. Articles should be formatted in Ms Word, font size 12 pt, 1.5 space, Times New Roman.

  4. Text should have full alignment.

  5. The first line of each new paragraph should be indented. The first lines of the first paragraph of the article and first paragraphs of each chapter should not be indented.

  6. The title of the article is written as a separate line, highlighted in bold and aligned left.

  7. Author’s name and town s/he represents are written as a separate line (highlighted in bold, aligned left), which follows the title.

  8. Short quotations (up to three lines) are included in the main text and put in quotation marks.

  9. Long quotations (more than three lines) are written as a separate paragraph (not indented, Times New Roman, 10 pt, 1.5 space).

  10. Use <…> if you need to omit something.

  11. Quoted sources should be referenced.

  12. Words should not be divided.

  13. Text can be highlighted in bold or italics (unless it is used for quotations).

  14. Highlighted text should not be underlined.

  15. References are incorporated into the text (see below), not in footnotes or endnotes.

  16. Footnotes are used only for notes and comments.

  17. Endnotes (placed after the main text) are not accepted.

  18. List of references (see below) should follow the main text and additional notes.


2. GUIDELINES FOR REFERENCING


  1. References are incorporated into the text in square brackets: [Author (Initials) (Title) (Year): (volume,) (page number)].

  2. The year of publication is specified in text only if there are several works of the same author.

  3. If an author has published multiple works in the same year, the entries should be marked with letters (a, b, c, etc.). For example: [Лотман 2000], [Лотман 2000a], [Лотман 2000b], etc.

  4. Initials are specified only if there are two or more authors with the same surname.

  5. In case of reference to a collection of articles, a journal or an anonymous source, 1 – 2 words from the title are given instead of author’s name.

  6. Footnotes are marked in text with superscript numbers.

  7. Sources consulted are presented as a separate list of references at the end of the article, which should have the title REFERENCES.

  8. The list of references can be divided into several sections especially if it comprises more than 20 works. For example: LITERATURE, SOURCES, DICTIONARIES, REFERENCE BOOKS, etc.

  9. All entries are listed in the ascending alphabetical order by the surname of the author. If an article is written in Russian, entries should first follow Russian alphabetical order and then Latin alphabetical order. If an article is written in Estonian or English, entries should first follow Latin alphabetical order and then Russian alphabetical order.

  10. The format of references depends on the language of the sources. See below for some examples of references.

  11. Each entry irrespective of the language of the source should be designated with a code corresponding with an in-text reference (highlighted in italics, separated from an entry with a hyphen). For example:

An article should have an abstract enclosed (not more than 250 words). The abstract should be in Russian and English irrespective of the main language of the article. The abstract should include author’s name, surname and the title of the article.
