The proceedings of the meeting started with the recitation from the holy Quran by Mr. Tahir Ali Shah and welcome address by Mr. Rafiq Rai (Director – HEC Karachi region). The house unanimously nominated and elected Dr. Imdad Ali Ismaili as Convener and Mr. Badar Sami as secretary of the committee.

The Convener of the meeting Prof. Dr. Imdad Ali Ismaili informed the participants that the comprehensive report of previous meeting held on 28th to 30th August 2008 has been already circulated among all the members of the committee, universities and institutions to have feedback from them.

The following programs were discussed by the participants of the meeting

  1. BS (Computer Science)

  2. MS (Computer Science)

After detailed revision of the minutes of the previous meeting held on August 28th to 30th 2008, following recommendations were made for BS (Computer Science) program to achieve the desired objectives;

Revision recommendations regarding BS (Computer Science) program

  1. Digital Logic Design should be a separate course of 3 credit hours instead of being part of “Digital Logic & Computer Architecture” course and should be included in the “Computing – Core”. “Computer Architecture” should be included in the “Computer Science – Core” as a full 3 credit hour course in place of “System Programming” and “System Programming” may be placed in “Computer Science – Elective” courses .

  1. Digital Computer Logic should not have any pre-requisite

  1. The credit hours for each course should be written using standard notations.

  1. Discrete Structures be moved from “Computing Core” to “Computer Science – Required Supporting courses”

  1. Contents of “Electromagnetism” should be included in the contents of “Basic Electronics”

  1. Numerical Computing should be moved from “Computer Science – Electives” to “Computer Science – Core” and contents may be updated to include Symbolic Computing related topics.

  1. Each “Computer Science – Elective” area/group should comprise of at least four courses. Since the areas of “Software Engineering”, “Multimedia” have less than 4 courses so more courses be included in those areas/groups.

  1. New areas/ groups may be included in “Computer Science – Electives” (like Entrepreneurship, Multimedia Computing etc.)

  1. The committee members also emphasized the need of revising the contents of the courses of the schemes for BS and MS(Comptuer Science) and advised to update books and reference material.

Following sub-committees are formed to revise the contents of the courses, recommend updated books, set objectives, and define pre-requisites of the courses.

  1. “Computing – core” and “Computer Science – core” courses;

  1. Dr. Zubair A. Sheikh

  2. Dr. Abu Turab Alam

  3. Mr. Badar Sami

  4. Mr. Yaseen Mehboob

  5. Dr. Imran Saeed Qureshi

  6. Dr. Amir Hayat

  7. Mr. Zafar NAsir

  1. “Computing – Electives” and “Computer Science – Electives”

  1. Dr. Nazeer A. Sangi

  2. Dr. Madad Ali Shah

  3. Dr. Imran Saeed Qureshi

  4. Dr. Amir Hayat

  5. Dr. Zafar Nasir

  1. “Computing – supporting” and “Computer Science – Supporting”

  1. Prof. Dr. Aftab Ahmed Malik

  2. Dr. Tahseen Ahmed Jilani

  3. Dr. Asif Gilani

  4. Dr. Asad ullah Shah

  1. “Computing – General Education”

  1. Mr. Badar Sami

  2. Dr. Tahseen Ahmed Jilani

The revised contents by the committees have been incorporated into the document.

Revision recommendations regarding MS (Computer Science) program

After detail discussion of BS curriculum the committee discussed the MS (Computer Science) program by confirming the minutes of the last meeting held in Aug-2008. The house actively participated in the discussion and suggested revisions and recommendations in light of the suggestions made in the last meeting held in August 2008.

Following were the main points of the discussion.

    1. Eligibility for MS (CS) was discussed in length for BS(Information Technology) and BS(Software Engineering) students to have choice for the admission in either disciplines of computing after 16 years of education. The house was divided into two groups and the majority was in favour to maintain the status-co and it is left to the universities which will have right to determine the deficiencies for each candidate and they have to cover those deficiencies by taking the courses as suggested by the universities.

    1. The first clause of the eligibility criteria for MS (CS) should be BS (Computer Science) degree program with minimum 130 credit hours. The criteria should be read as follows

BS (CS) Degree program (min. 130 credit hours)

    1. Advance topics may be placed in each specialization area to cover new emerging trends of the subject

    1. All of the Advanced courses from specialization areas of ACM’s curricula – 2001 (revised in 2008) may be incorporated into the specialized electives areas of the document. The house also suggested to add in the course title the word “Advanced” as prefix for “Theory of Computation” course in MS (Computer Science) core – curriculum – 2004.

    1. The committee members recommended that classification of minimum Electives in the Area of Specialization” and “Electives” should be withdrawn and universities and institutions be allowed to decide 12 credit hours courses on the basis of availability of the resources.

    1. The committee members unanimously approved the 12 credit hours courses mentioned in the scheme. However it was suggested that more core courses may be added in the list so that university/institution may have flexibility of offering MS Program on the availability of faculty members. The house was divided over the addition of the core courses and matter remained unresolved.

    1. Following Committees were formed to revise the course contents

a) “Advanced theory of Computation” and “Advanced Operating System”

Dr. Muhammed Mehboob Yaseen

Dr. Zafar Nasir

Dr. Turab Alam

Dr. Asif Gilani

b) “Advanced Computer Architecture”

Dr. M. Imran Saeed

Dr. Madad Ali Shah

c) “Advanced Algorithms Analysis”

Dr. Tahseen Ahmed Jilani

Dr. Asad Ali Shah

The revised contents by the committees have been incorporated into the document.

    1. It was also proposed that the thesis is a long term not a short term report therefore its credits may be increased from 6 to 9 credit hours

The complete Curriculum of BS (Computer Science) and MS (Computer Science) are revised in the light of above recommendations and are attached as Appendix – A and B respectively herewith.

The meeting ended with the vote of thanks by the convener.
