Prior to the upgrade, 2 T-1 lines were used to supply patrons and staff with Internet service. Each of the T-1 lines had the capability to move data at a rate of 1,500 Kbps for a combined rate of 3,000 Kbps. The new fiber optic cable will provide speeds of 40,000 Kbps with an option to expand to 100,000 Kbps or more in the future. The new system will allow the bandwidth to be balanced between staff and patrons to give everyone a better Internet experience. According to WebSiteOptimization.com, since 1995 the average webpage has increased by 48 times, and the number of objects per page has grown by nearly 37 times. A Google engineer used Google bot to determine that the average webpage in 2010 was about 320K (Kilobytes) in size. An average 10 minute video on YouTube is about 30 to 35MB. Prior to the upgrade, a 10 minute video would take about 21 to 24 seconds to download. After the upgrade, the same video will be ready to watch in less than 2 seconds. The new fiber optic connection is designed to provide staff and patrons with the High-Speed-Internet needed to experience the full benefits of the ever expanding World Wide Web. The current fiber optic connection will also provide plenty of bandwidth as the Rosenberg Library expands back to the first floor and adds new technology. The Rosenberg Library’s collection of online databases, available to patrons free, 24-hours a day, continues to grow. Recently added to this collection is Standard & Poor’s NetAdvantage. This online application offers a user friendly menu-based search option connecting users with financial information from the basic to the advanced. Library patrons now have online access to market news and investment information, an advanced stock screener, over 5,000 stock reports, 10,000 company profiles, a database of over 90,000 public and private companies as well as 70,000 biographies on top company officials. Not only a resource for investment and market analysis, Standard & Poor’s NetAdvantage also provides financial literacy information with topics including using a debit card, saving for college, renting vs. buying a home, and rolling over an IRA.
