Fellowship Programme in Pathology


(Clinical Biochemistry)

Introduction:

The departments of Medical Biochemistry and Pathology at the College of Medicine, King Khalid University Hospital, King Saud University, offer a five years residency programme in the field of clinical biochemistry. This programme is a joint postgraduate training in collaboration with the department of pathology and laboratory medicine at the King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Center; the department of pathology, Riyadh Armed Forces Hospital and the department of pathology, King Fahad National Guard Hospital. The four institutions agreed to provide all facilities available, with regard to staff, education, equipments and specimens for the training programme.

The programme aims at providing well trained and research oriented specialized clinical biochemist with teaching capability for medical laboratories, hospitals and universities allover the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

The programme provides clinical biochemists, in addition to theoretical and clinical biochemistry teaching and training, a general knowledge of pathology, microbiology, pharmacology, immunology, molecular biology and genetics.

They must acquire knowledge of the common clinical disorders and understand the basic principles of laboratory utilization in the diagnosis and management of diseases.

A certificate entitled “Fellowship in Pathology“(Clinical Biochemistry) will be awarded by King Saud University to those residents who have successfully completed the programme that requires a period of five years.




Deadline for application:

- April every year, to be announced by the Postgraduate Center, College of Medicine, KSU.


Goals:

  1. To prepare a highly qualified clinical biochemist.

  2. To allow residents to acquire knowledge and develop the skill as applied to patient care.

  3. To encourage creativity and research.


Conditions for admission:

  1. Applicants must be medically qualified (holding MB BS degree).

  2. Applicants must have completed satisfactorily one year internship.

  3. An interview and a selection examination will be required prior to admission.

  4. Each applicant should secure a letter of approval from his/her sponsor/employer that he/she would be a full-time resident all through the programme.


Study programme:

  1. Residents will abide by the rules and regulations of King Saud University Fellowship Programme in medical fields.

  2. The programme will require successful completion of 5 years.

  3. The aim of the programme is to qualify residents to the level of specialist in clinical biochemistry.

  4. Candidates of the first year will be asked to attend a general basic course in pathology.


Methods of training:

  1. Professional experience, which entails working with experienced clinical biochemistry consultants in the unit.

  2. Formal lectures, seminars and practical work.

  3. Attendance of the relevant scientific meetings.

  4. Carrying out a research project during the fourth year of training to be completed before the end of 5th year.


Evaluation:

Residents will be evaluated in theoretical and practical skills by continuous assessments and final examination at the end of every year. In addition, an oral examination will be held at the end of the third and fifth year.


Examinations:

  1. R1 Exam: The R1 written exam will carry 70% of the total marks and 30% for the professional evaluation during the residents' rotations.

  2. R2 & R4 Exams: Will be assessed as following:

    1. Continuous assessment: 30%.

    2. Final Exam: 70%.

  3. R3 Exam: At the end of the third year of the programme and consists of the following:

    1. Written Exam (Essays and MCQs): ( 40%).

    2. Practical Exam: (40%).

    3. Oral Exam: (20%).

  4. R5 Exam: At the end of the fifth year of the programme and consists of the following:

    1. Written Exam (2 Essay type papers, 3 hrs each)(40%).

    2. Practical Exam: (40%).

    3. Oral Exam: (20%).


The candidates have to pass with a score not less than 60% in each part of the examination. But the resident has to score a total of 70% in the whole examination in order to be considered as pass.


Main topics to be covered during the fellowship programme:


  1. Medical biochemistry: Enzymes, chemistry and metabolism of carbohydrates, proteins and lipids.

  2. Clinical biochemistry: Disorders of metabolism, routine clinical biochemical laboratory investigations, tumor markers and clinical endocrinology.

  3. Molecular biology, immunochemistry, toxicology and therapeutic drug monitoring.

  4. Quality control and laboratory management.
