Feuerstein, C. W. (1980). “Working with the Holocaust victims psychologically: some vital cautions.” Journal of Contemporary psychotherapy 11.1 Spring/Sammer: 70-77.

This article traces tje evolution of a major psychological organization's involvement with the Holocaust as a fully justified and legitimate topic of concern and of an ongoing commitment to its study and memory. A number of important cautions and requirements are presented for mental health workers who wish to work in the areas encompassed by the Holocaust, including working therapeutically with Survivors of the Holocaust and their children. The special danger of diminishing or trivialinzing the Holocaust in the course of writing about aspects or elements of it in psychological articles or writings, as has been the case in other kinds of literature, is brought into focus. 211 211

A model for time-limited group treatment of exiled survivors of torture is presented and the importance of placing such traumatic experiences in a sociopolitical context is emphasized. The model is illustrated by descriptions of work with a group made up of Central and South American refugees. Therapeutic techniques are proposed that focus on symptoms of torture-related post-traumatic stress disorder, allowing group members to attain gradual psychological reorganizations

This is a retrospective study on the effects ot torture on Latin American refugee women in Toronto. Thirty-six cases of female torture victims are reviewed. The cases are divided in 2 groups, according to whether they experienced physcal and psychological torture or only psychological assaults. Both groups are compared in terms of demographic characteristics, social and /or political involvement prior to the traumatic experiences, symptoms for which they sought psychiatric intervention and recovery rates. The symptoms presented by all women are consistent with those described in the literature for torture victims, regrdless of their sex. The main findings are that women who experienced direct physical and psychological violence more frequently had persistence of symptoms than women who experienced only psychological violence.

Fortin, P. (1995).

The purpose of this chapter is to present cognitive-behavioral (CB) group therapy methods for use with children, adolescents, and adult survivors et traumatic experiences. We begin by presenting a brief history of the development of group therapy for trauma survivors, followed by reviews of current influential theories and published studies on CB group therapy outcomes. Next we update the current status of our knowledge about CB group psychotherapy for trauma survivors ; clinical issues are identified and specific recommendations for addressing these issues are made. Finally, we discuss current limitations in our knowledge of CB group intervention and identify areas that require furher inestigation and development.
