УРОК 1. Грамматика: времена глагола в действительном залоге, функции глаголов to be, to have, словообразование

Прорабатывая тексты, упражнения урока, обращайте вни­мание на глаголы. Вы найдете здесь времена Present, Past, Future в группах Indefinite, Continuous, Perfect в действитель­ном залоге (Active Voice). Обратите внимание на различные функ­ции глаголов to be, to have в предложениях и на слово­образование в английском языке.


I. Прочтите следующие слова, уточните их произношение по
транскрипции в словаре:

The Bibliotheca Alexandrina (Alexandria Library) was for several centuries the cultural centre of the western world. It was built by the heirs of Alexander the Great 2400 years ago and burned, allegedly, by Julius Caesar. With the aim of reviving the world's most famous ancient library and to preserve eight million books, a new library has been constructed on almost the same site as its predecessor. It has a design life span of 200 years, and the most immediate threat to its longevity is its proximity to the Mediterranean Sea, only 40 m away.

The architectural design featured four basement levels, with up to six working floors under the sloping roof. The Library's orientation is dictated by the need to minimize the amount of direct sunlight entering the building.

The library building is supported on a piled raft. Adjacent to the library building, a planetarium and a science museum have been constructed and supported on a plain raft without piles. Construction of the diaphragm wall and the piles of the library started in May 199$, and casting of the piled raft started in July 1996. Construction was com­pleted in February 1999, and the building is scheduled to enter service in December 2000.

В этом уроке рассматриваются времена глаголов в Present, Past и Future в группах Indefinite, Continuous, Perfect в страда­тельном залоге (Passive Voice). Причастие настоящего и про­шедшего времени (Participle I, II), которые выступают в предло­жениях самостоятельно и имеют определенные функции.

Они могут быть определением и обстоятельством в зависи­мости от того места, которое они занимают в предложении. Обратите внимание на перевод модальных глаголов и их эк­вивалентов.


I.Прочтите следующие слова, уточните их произношение по транскрипции в словаре:

The railways of today extend over 1,100000 kilometers covering all five continents: Europe, America, Asia, Africa and Australia. The goods traffic of the railways of all countries total 7,4 billion t/km. The railways carry billions of passengers a year. This is good proof to the importance of railways for the life of the world's community.

The technical possibility of this mode of transport is enormous indeed. Electric and diesel electric traction play a leading role in handling traffic. Specialized wagons and contain­ers are used on an ever increasing scale. Heavy rails are widely used. Modern comput­erized systems have become an integral part of stations, shops and traffic control cen­ters.

The modern community can hardly be imagined without railways although their role is different in the various countries. In some of them railways are the main mode of trans­port while in others the railways play a comparatively small role in the overall for­warding process. However there is a specified area of activity of the railways. The most typical is the handling of immense volumes of commuter

traffic as well as long distance traffic while forwarding passengers over distances of 1000 or 1500 km, carrying bulk goods such as coal, ore, timber, cement, grain, motor cars etc, and forwarding industrial products and food using containers to move them from door-to-door.

Britain is the name of island which contains the countries of England, Scotland and Wales. Northern Ireland is on a separate island and together they are

called the British Isles. Britain or Great Britain is the name of island off the north-west coast of Europe, one of the British Isles. В английском языке время глагола в придаточном допол­нительном предложении зависит от времени глагола главно­го предложения и подчиняется правилу согла­сования времен. В русском языке не существует такой зависимости, и перевод осуществляется по схеме, которая подробно излагается в §.

Сложноподчиненное предложение состоит из главного и придаточного предло­жения, которое соединяется с главным при помощи подчинительных союзов и союзных слов. Часто в английских предложениях союзы опускаются, а при пере­воде на русский язык их нужно добавить. (Подробнее об этом читайте в §).

Around the world there is a demand for greater mobility and a perpetual need for urban transportation systems of higher capacity and reduced journey time in order to raise living standards and to allow for population growth and expanding markets. Indeed, there is an infrastructure and for improvement of existing infrastructure, a demand that can only be met through the active involvement of structural en­gineers. The Lucerne Congress thus addressed an important contemporary issue by covering structural engineering contributions to the development of urban transportation systems. Congress session dealt with existing, planned and visionary structures, including the design, construction, operation and maintenance of bridges, airports, stations and tunnels. Individual sessions were also dedicated to specific large transportation projects, providing a multidisciplinary view of structural, environmental, social, lo­gistical and financial aspects.

Structural engineers must consider Aesthetics in a cultural and historical context during development, even in situations where resources are limited. New guidelines and principles are presented for consid­ering Sustainability and the Environment, encouraging a move away from a minimum initial cost ap­proach to one that takes into account total embodied and operating energy, material reuse, waste, green products, and environmental pollution.

В английском языке наряду с простыми формами причас­тия часто встречаются и сложные формы. Причастия с отно­сящимися к нему словами образует причастный оборот. При­частные обороты мо­гут быть двух типов: соответствующие русским деепричастным оборотам и самостоятельные прича­стные обороты.

The Lucerne Congress (Switzerland) began with 30 papers and almost 100 pa­pers were dedicated to the design and construction of structures for urban trans­portation. The majority of papers deals with rail and road bridges and demon­strates the need for durable structures, minimal construction times, and re­duced environmental impact through noise control, judicious urban land use, and aes­thetics. Although innovative technology can help, these needs can be met by care­ful design and planning using existing techniques, as illustrated by many papers presenting practical solutions to real problems. Tunnels are proposed as perhaps the most relevant solution to future transportation needs in urban areas, since they increase public acceptance by concealing transport corridors underground, thus saving the cultural heritage, avoiding the segregation of communities, and maintaining land for other use. Many papers emphasise the importance of cre­ating integrated transportation systems with intermodal railway sta­tions and air­port structures that should be made passenger friendly through close cooperation between structural engineers and architects. Structures in and on water can provide innovative solutions to infra­structure needs in urban areas where available land space is limited; examples are presented of structures that are floating, submerged or founded in water. Pedestrian structures are an ideal field for innovation and new ideas in structural engineering, as illustrated by papers covering the design, analysis, con­struction and rehabilitation of structures em­ploying both basic and high technology.

A.: Excuse me, can you tell me the right time?

A.: Thank you very much; it's only a quarter past ten by my watch, so it must be slow. By the way, do you know how far it is from here to the station?

В.: Yes, it's a little more than three miles. It'll take you nearly an hour if you intend to walk. Are you in a hurry?

A.: Yes, rather. I have to catch a train at eleven thirty (11.30). I shall have to hurry to get there in time. Is there a bus along this road?

В.: I don't think there is. May I give you a lift in my car? I shall go past the station and we shall be there in plenty of time for you to catch your train.

A.: That's very kind of you. Are you sure it isn't any trouble?

В.: No trouble at all.

A.: Thank you. I'm really very grateful to you.

One dark night a young man was going home from the railway station. The road was very lonely, for it was very late. He was walking as fast as he could. Then very suddenly he saw some­body following him. The faster he went the faster the man behind followed him.

At last he decided to turn into a side-street. So he turned into the first side-street and walked as fast as he could. After some time the young man turned his head, looked back and saw the man walking behind him. "It is clear", he thought, "the man is a rob­ber". He took another turn and so did the robber. At last the young man turned to him, and said "What do you want? Why are you following me?" "I'm going to Mr. Brown's, "said the man, and the porter at the station told me to follow you as Mr. Brown lives next door to you. I don't know his address".

§ 1. Времена глагола в действительном залоге.

Tenses in Active Voice

В английском языке существуют три времени: Present — настоя­щее, Past — прошедшее, Future — будущее. Помимо этого суще­ствуют группы времен, отличающиеся и по образованию, и по упот­реб­лению: Indefinite — неопределенная группа, Continuous — продол­женная, Perfect — завер­шенная.

Времена в английском языке образуются путем сочетания вспо­мога­тельных глаголов (to be, to do, to have, shall, will) со смысловы­ми глаго­лами в одной из четырех основных форм:

I форма (V1) Infinitive — инфинитив, неопределенная форма гла­гола;

II форма (V2) Past Indefinite — имеет окончание -ed для стан­дарт­ных глаголов, формы нестандартных глаголов см. в таблице на с. 36;
