APPENDIX 1: DEFINITIONS OF KEY TERMS AND PHRASES



Agreement - a contract between a grant recipient and the Commonwealth Government for grant funding under the program, as amended from time to time in accordance with the Guidelines and the Ministerial Directions.


Applicant - an entity that makes an application under the program.


Carbon - for the purposes of this program, refers to greenhouse gases responsible for global warming which are carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), perfluorocarbons (PFCs) and sulphur hexafluoride (SF6).


Food manufacturing sector - undertakes manufacturing of:

    • Meat and Meat Product Manufacturing;

    • Seafood Processing;

    • Dairy Product Manufacturing;

    • Fruit and Vegetable Processing;

    • Oil and Fat (food) Manufacturing;

    • Grain Mill and Cereal Product Manufacturing;

    • Bakery Product Manufacturing (non factory-based bakeries excluded);

    • Sugar and Confectionery Manufacturing;

    • Other Food Product Manufacturing; or

    • Beverage Manufacturing.


Foundries manufacturing sector - undertakes manufacturing of:

    • finished iron and steel products by casting molten ferrous metals in moulds;

    • finished non-ferrous metal products by casting molten non-ferrous metals in moulds; and/or

    • semi-finished or finished iron or steel products by the process of forging or compression.


Smelting, refining, extrusion, machining, fabrication and other metal processing activities are excluded.


Innovation Australia - means the body of that name established by Section 6 of the Industry Research and Development Act 1986.


Innovation - a product, process or service that either offers a benefit to users that is significantly improved or does not yet exist and/or relies on a method of production, method of transformation of inputs or method of performance that is significantly improved or does not yet exist. (Not a consideration for the investment programs).


Low pollution technologies – less carbon (see above) technologies that emit waste.


Manufacturing - the physical or chemical transformation of materials or components into new products or services.


Non-tax exempt company - a company that is incorporated in Australia under the Corporations Act 2001.


Process - a series of actions, changes or functions that transform inputs into different outputs.


Product - something used by someone or something to produce a benefit to the user.


Program Delegate - an employee of the Department of Innovation, Industry, Science and Research who has been empowered by the Minister, or otherwise duly authorised, to carry out the relevant function in respect of the program.


Related body corporate - has the same meaning as in Section 50 of the Corporations Act 2001.


Service - performance of an activity to deliver a benefit to someone or something. The method of delivery will often rely on the use of products or processes.

6 The ARENA will invest in businesses seeking to get innovative clean energy proposals and technologies off the ground, including large-scale renewable energy projects. The Clean Technology Innovation Program aims to fund research and development effort that is already ‘mature’ and that can be used by industry sooner.
