Normative Liberalism and Normative Institutionalism:

Normative Liberalism

= asserts that it is, in fact, the individuals that matter, and not the state.

= not as objective as realism.

= there is the concept of morality in normative liberalism.

It believes in the "individual", it forwards individual issues like rights, which also has to do with morality.


In IR, Normative Liberalism recognizes International law and human rights – Individual freedoms and rights.

"The rule of law is the normative ideal of a liberal politics: it guarantees individual rights against the state, organizes and limits the exercise of state power, and provides the conditions for political transactions. Issues of advocacy concern the content and character of the norms given expression and life in the rule of law."

Normative Institutionalism

= focuses on the shaping of the individual based on the institutions/society's norms.

The norms and formal rules of institutions shape the actions of individuals within them. Hence, individuals within institutions feel obligated and constraint by the norms and rules.

In IR, countries concur, ratify and adopt some treaties. With a great number of countries ratifying a given treaty, the rules of which becomes norms in the international system. Once countries ratify a treaty, they are constraint and obligated to adhere with its rules.
