Good analysis of Fouquet’s financial machinations to prevent royal bankruptcy. He notes that Fouquet had little experience in finances and depended on advisors and clients.

Dessert, Daniel. “Finances et société au XVIIe siècle: á propos de la chambre de justice de 1661.” Annales E.S.C. 29 (1974): 847-82. 11.1% of the West India Company’s capital came from the trial of financiers connected to Fouquet. He claims that Colbert’s financial circle became more corrupt than Colbert’s had been. He denies Colbert had any success in commercial/colonial matters, although Dessert’s forte is not this topic.
