Inspired by Colbert, the popular novelist Gomberville provided this guide book to the heart of the Spanish empire in America. Books of this type and dozens of memoirs in the archives remind us that exploitation of the Spanish empire remained priority number one in French imperial strategy. This book includes other treatises and memoirs related to Guiana.

I regret not having been able to read this letter from the missionary successor to Father Breton, although M. Debien indicated to me that not much of importance is contained therein. Beaumont discusses Carib assistance to the French in the 166-67 war against the English.

Caillé de Castres, Moïse. De Wilde ou les sauvages caribes insulaires d’Amérique. This manuscript of 1694 has been recently transcribed with a preface of Céline Celma, an introduction by Marcel Chatillon, the owner of the manuscript and annotation by Jean-Christophe Germain. The author was a truchement who had much first hand experience with the Caribs of Dominica. I do not know the publication data, if indeed it has been published. The manuscript is, I believe, located in the Musée départementale d’archéologie et de préhistoire at Fort-de-France, Martinique.

“Relation de la Guiane, et le commerce qu’on y peut faire.” Bound with Acuna, Relation. Paris: Barbin, 1682. Emphasizes the importance of good relations with the Galibis for colonial success at Cayenne. Reflects Colbert’s and Le Febvre de La Barre’s position.

Sanson d’Abbeville, Nicholas. L’Amérique en plusieurs cartes et en divers traits de géographie. Paris: N. Sanson, 1657. The original dedication to Fouquet was excised from later editions. Sanson then worked for Colbert.

Savary, Jacques. Le parfait negociant, ou instruction generale pour ce qui regarde le commerce des merchandises de France. Paris: Jean Guignard, 1679. This oft edited economic treatise, dedicated to Colbert, reflected the minister’s ideas A to Z. He justifies the slave trade on the basis of religion, that enslaved Africans are either idolaters or Muslims.
