Author’s note: This bibliography includes sources for all references in the published text and materials that the author has seen and considers useful for the general subject, as well as others not seen. Although not systematically annotated, I occasionally make what I hope are helpful comments on specific items. Despite its considerable length, this bibliography cannot be considered definitive, far from it. I offer it as an initial starting point for those who might become interested in the topic. I welcome suggestions as to additions and deletions. email@example.com
The items highlighted in blue were the most important for this project. Those in green were next in importance. Those in black helped for comparative or contextual purposes. Those in red were not consulted, for a variety of reasons, including the practical one of finishing this project.
Many manuscript and primary printed sources consulted for my previous three books and the articles cited below are not reproduced herein; for example, the voluminous anthropological, archaeological and ethnohistorical sources on the Island Caribs or Kallinago. These can be consulted in my 1992 Cannibal Encounters. I have included post 1992 literature on the Caribs. For another example, pre 1985 literature on Richelieu, Fouquet and Colbert are available in my 1985 Garland bio/bibliography. Nor do I include bibliographic references supporting the chapter on French representations of Tropical America 1500-1700 that ultimately was excluded from the book. This unedited chapter is on my web page.

Guide to Materials for American History in the Libraries and Archives of Paris. Edited by Waldo G. Leland. Vol. I. Washington, DC: Carneigie Institution, 1932; reprint ed. N.Y.: Kraus Reprints, 1965. For the period before the 1670s-and to a lesser extent after 1670- the Bibliothèque Nationale (BN) is an absolutely essential repertory of primary materials. Leland also covers the archives of the Quai d’Orsay, the French equivalent of our State Department. These are the Archives des affaires étrangères. Although I do not cite many of these primary documents in the book, a perusal of a number of my articles cited herein demonstrate the importance of these archives. A young scholar cannot simply assume that extensive time at the Archives Nationales at Aix-en-Provence (Centre d’Archives d’Outre-mer or CAOM) is adequate. Leland provides an invaluable guide. The designations Ms. Fr. and Ms. Fr. N. A. (nouvelles acquisitions) are the relevant ones for the BN. Among the many collections that I have exploited during my career are the Mélanges Colbert, Cinq cents Colbert, the Collection Clairambault, Collection Joly de Fleury, Collection Arnoul, Collection Baluze.
