PhD (2 positions) Production of a green refinery feed via catalytic pyrolysis of biomass
The research project is part of the research on conversion processes of fuels in the laboratory of thermal engineering. This research theme concerns the production of synthesis gas, bio-gas (free of tars) and bio-oil (free of char particles). Chemical reactors are built in which the conversion processes are investigated, tested and demonstrated. Experimental research is supported by modelling; global modelling of the whole process as well as detailed modelling of the underlying physical-chemical processes.
The project will target development of an efficient reactor system and new catalysts for the flash pyrolysis of solid biomass to value-added and sustainable fuels. This will assist in meeting the demand for the usage of the bio-fuels in combination with conventional fuels according to the directives of the European Union.
The central theme of this project is to establish ways to improve the quality of pyrolysis-oil by developing:
PhD1: catalysts for selective catalytic deoxygenation of biomass, and
PhD2: a cyclonic pyrolysis reactor with an integrated high-efficient rotating particle filter and a catalyst regenerator.
The project is funded by the "Green Sustainable Process Technologies" program of the Government of The Netherlands
