Full-time MSC in Medical Microbiology October 2010
TABLE OF CONTENTS
This is a full-time programme in Advanced Medical Microbiology, intended primarily for students who wish to obtain an MSc but providing the opportunity for suitable students to obtain a PhD. The aim of this programme is to develop critical, analytical skills such that you can identify problems, formulate hypotheses, design experiments, acquire and interpret data, and draw conclusions. Topics covered by the taught part of the programme include biological and pathogenic properties of micro-organisms, their role in health and disease, the reactions of the host to infection, and the scientific basis for the detection, control and anti-microbial treatment of infectious diseases. Particular emphasis is placed on recent advances in areas such as molecular biology and immunology.
The formal teaching of the programme at the University takes place on Wednesdays during semesters, together with a one week, full-time block session for mixed practical and lecture-based learning during March or April (this varies according to when Easter falls). The content is arranged as a series of four 15 credit modules and two 30 credit modules. A 15 credit module represents 150 hours of work, typically with about 50 hours proscribed at the University. Assessment is also modularised and consists of a combination of coursework and written examination, usually at the end of the semester in which the module took place
At postgraduate level the formal teaching must be regarded as only a part of the programme and must be supplemented by extensive reading. Your supervisor may also recommend that you attend supplementary lectures.
As a full-time student, you are expected to spend the remainder of the week in the laboratory, or engaged on your project in other ways, such as in the library. Note that your project work will not be confined to the semesters but will continue throughout the year. You are allowed to take some holidays, but this should be discussed with your supervisor. Unless absence has been agreed with your supervisor, you will be expected to be in the University working on your project.
The MSc programme is designed to be completed in two years although you may take longer if necessary.
