656 pages, 2nd edition, 2010. This new edition of the standard work on German speaking clockmakers (from Germany, Austria, Switzerland) contains information on 20,000 clock and watch makers. As well as the biographical data many entries include information about the items made and a few include serial numbers and date. This edition has 6,000 more names listed, plus revisions and corrections, compared to the 1st edition.

40 pages, illus., 1972. A reprint of the 36 page catalogue distributed by the American Watch Company at the World’s Fair held in New Orleans between 1884 and 1885. Fourteen of the pages describe the operations in manufacturing at the Waltham factory (the company changed its name to The American Waltham Co. in 1885). Good copy, card covers.

437 pages, illustrated, 2nd edition, 1998. This is a valuable, learned volume, being a record of the contributions to the Longitude Symposium held at Harvard University in 1993. The symposium was held to commemorate John Harrison's birth 300 years before, and is the best contribution to understanding Harrison and time keeping at sea since Quill's book, John Harrison, the Man who found Longitude, was published in 1966. As well as information about marine timekeepers by Harrison, Earnshaw, Mudge and Arnold the book covers Harrison's wooden and brass regulators. With dust jacket.

1534 ANDREWS (H.C.):

A Hertfordshire Worthy – John Briant Bell-Founder and Clockmaker 1749 – 1829 O/P £195.00

95 pages, 11 plates, 1930. A biography of John Briant who worked in Hertford, together with a detailed list of his bells, turret clocks and longcase clocks. This is a very rare book. A good copy, the card covers a little worn and marked.

1784 ANON: L’Art de la Boîte À Musique / The Art of the Musical Box O/P £10.00

A 12-inch LP vinyl record (# 36461) published by Arion, Paris. The record contains 58 pieces of music recorded from disc, cylinder and other music boxes in the collection of the Conservatoire Autonome des Boîtes À Musique, Geneva. The text on the record sleeve is in French, with an English translation on a separate sheet. I have not played the record but am told that one side is scratched. An unusual item.

2109 [ANON]: The London Wholesale, Manufacturing, and Retail Goldsmiths, Silversmiths, Jewellers, Watch Makers, Opticians, and Cutlers’ Directory, .…. O/P £55.00

320 pages, facsimile edition, 1996. First published in 1861 this is a useful directory for many London trades including clock making and watchmaking. The directory also covers many trades (including clocks and watches) in Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester as well as the watch and clock tool manufacturers’ of Prescot, and the watch trades of Coventry. This facsimile reprint was limited to 500 copies and is a good reference source for clock and watch enthusiasts. A very good copy of the card covers edition.

721 [ANSONIA]: The Ansonia Clock Company Catalogue 1894 NEW £15.00

168 pages, illustrated, a modern facsimile reprint. A useful guide to Ansonia clocks being sold in 1894 when the company had offices in New York, Chicago and London. The catalogue illustrates alarm clocks, carriage, mantel and table clocks, wall clocks and tallcase clocks as well as marble clocks, other clocks, bronzes and candelabra. Every item is priced, many under 10 US dollars! Card covers.
