Teacher : Hello , teachers and students !

Nice to see you. How are you ? I’m o’key .

Today we are having our final project lesson which is devoted to American Cities of the United States of America .Its travelling to the Cities of the USA .Before you visiting American Cities I’d like you remembered that you’ve already learned about the USA from books and TV .

Teacher: Modern life is impossible without travelling. Millions of people all over the world spend their holidays travelling . They travel to see other countries and continents, modern cities and the ruins of ancient towns . They travel to enjoy picturesque places or just for a change of scene . It is always interesting to discover new things , to see different ways of life , to meet different people , to try different food , to listen to different musical rhythms .There are express trains , cars and yet airlines all of that provide you with comfort and security .

If you travel for pleasure you would like by all means to enjoy picturesque places . You will have a good opportunity to enjoy wonderful monuments of cultural and historical places , to learn a lot of about the history of the country , about the world around of us , to meet people of different nationalities and others .When we travel we see and learn a lot of things that we can never see or learn at home /

If you want to get somewhere as quickly as possible the best way is to travel by plane .It is not cheap but fast ,convenient and comfortable .For the best possible trip it is better to book tickets in advance /In the second half of the 20 th century tourism became one of the world ’s most important industries .The transportation became more available and leisure started to occupy a significant portion of people’s lives , so millions of people spend their holidays each year travelling somewhere away from their place of residence .This way tourism brings different people in contact with each other and helps them understand each other better as well as broadens their horizons /

.These days political situation changed and going abroad became much easier for Russians so they joined millions of people travelling to other countries , for example to American Cities .Still no matter where you live , I think you should try travelling abroad at least once in your life just to see now people in other cultures live and to get new experiences .Russians who want to see and experience another country ’s culture and history usually go to different countries . So Welcome to American Cities. We’ll begin our travelling with the geography of the United States .

.S1:When we speak about America I imagine a vast territory with different types of climate. The United States of America is the fourth largest country in the world ( after Russia, Canada and China ). It occupies the southern part of North America and stretches from the Pacific to the Atlantic ocean . It also includes Alaska in the north and Havaii in the Pacific Ocean . The total area of the country is about nine and a half million square kilometers. The USA boarders on Canada in the north and on Mexico in the south . It also has a sea-boarder with Russia .

St2 If you look at the map of the USA you can see New York or the Big Apple as the Americans often call it is the largest city in the USA and in the whole world .

It was founded in the 17 th century .It stands in the mouth of the Hudson River . The people of New York live within five boroughs of Manhattan , Brooklyn , Queens , the Bronx and Staten Island .

Manhattan Island the oldest part of the city was bought from the Native Americans for the amount of goods worth 26 .

Now it is one of the busiest financial and cultural centre in the world offering the visitors a unique collection of experiences and attractions .There is a wide choice of internationally acclaimed theatres ,restaurants and museums , historic parks and churches .

Manhattan is also a district of business and finance .In Wall Street there are offices of large companies and banks as well as New York Stock Exchange which dominates the business life of the whole world. New York is an international city .On the map of Manhattan one can find Little Italy with the Italian restaurants and its own way of life .One world applies to driving your own car in Manhattan : don’t streets are jammed and the parking in scarce and astronomically expensive .

New York is an international city . . Brighton Beach where the immigrants from the former Soviet Union live and Chinatown inhabited the Chinese .

New York is famous for its fine department stores and boutiques .In the evening you can enjoy one of its many nightclubs , the ballet, opera and a show or concert . Broadway is the centre of night life .It is the longest street in New York with many sights .

The best way to go around New York is on foot .New York is a paradise for walkers who enjoy

the finest window shopping and people watching .You can also travel anywhere you want by subway and buses

New York is famous for its skyscrapers .

However one gets around New York it is important to know some basic geography: Fifth Avenue divides the city between East and West. Most streets in Manhattan are one-way. With a few exceptions , traffic on even numbered streets travels east , and traffic on old –numbered streets travels west. To New Yorkers downtown does connote the city centre . Rather “downtown» simply means «south» and «uptown» means «north»

The unprecedented terrorist attack on September 11,2001 disquised the face of New York

Two twin towers which used to form the World Trade Centre were destroyed as the result of the planes crash .This was the tragic day for the people of the USA and for the whole world .

St3 Now let’s speak about history of New York .In 1324 Giovany da Verrazano an Italian sailing in the service of the king of France tried to find a western route of India .He sailed Ms ship along the eastern coast of North America and on the way found a very pleasant place within two bibls between which flowed to the sea a very great river which was very deep in the mouth .He was afraid to go into the river in his ship so he used a small boat to sail into the bay .Verrazano was the first white man who visited the bay New York .

S4:Some words about industry of New York . The “ Big Apple” as New York City is nicknamed lies an energy.. International aiport is one of the busiest in the world .

New York is a city of skyscrapers- those incredible , high buildings which American

invented .Not far from the Empire State Building there is an interesting architectural ensemble-Rockfeller Centre .It was built according to one general plan . Rockfeller Centre consists of sky-scrapers . It houses all kinds of offices , enterprises , theatres and music halls .

St5:. The Empire State Building is one of the world’ s tallest buildings . It is situated in New York City on the West Side of Fifth Avenue .Completed in 1931 in accordance with any original design first suggested by John J.Rascob the Empire State replaced a historic hotel the first Waldorf-Astoria . Its construction set speed records and it was completed in less than two years .The building’ s exterior is covered by Indiana limestone and granite and supported by a steel framework .For this framework 60000 tons of a metal were used, 102 stories above the street .It has height 1472 ft.

St6:» New York Times» has circulation of any newspapers in the USA selling more than two million copies each day . Because of great size of the USA local newspapers are more important than national ones .Only “ New York Times» is read over a large part of the country .

St7: As you know the symbol of the United States of America is the Statue of Liberty . In 1884 the people of France presented the United States of America with an extraordionary gift as token of friendship .It was an enormous statue ( one of the largest ever built ) of a woman stepping out of broken chains and holding the torch of freedom in her raised right hand .This figure of “Liberty enlightening the world» has come to be known simply as the Statue of Liberty .

St8: Now I’d like to tell you about famous leadership of the USA Franclin Roosevelt. Franclin Roosevelt was born in Hyde Park , New York in 1882 at “Springwood» his family’ s country estate .

Roosevelt began his political career as a state senator . Then he was appointed as assistant secretary of the Navy Department where he established a reputation as energetic, effective administration and earned considerable respect .

In 1920 Roosevelt left the Navy Department to continue his political career in the Democratic Party .

Franclin Roosevelt was President of the United States in 1940. On December 7 , 1941 Japanese airplanes attacked an American Naval base at Pearl Harbour in Havaii. There was the largest single-day loss in US Navy history .This attack brought the USA into World War II .

St9: Washington is the capital of the United States of America .It is one of the most beautiful cities in the USA .It is situated in the mouth of the Potomac River , in the District of Columbia ( (DC), not belonging to any state .

Washington was named after the first US President George Washington .The city is unique in its own way – it was specially designed as the capital of the USA . The architect who drew up the plan of the city Pierre L’Enfant wanted it to be convenient .

The city of Washington D.C. is rather large and very beautiful , being at the same time different from all the other cities in the USA because there are no skyscrapers .

Washington D.C. has the population of about 900.000 people .Being the administrative centre of the country , it doesn’t have any industry .They say, nothing is produced in Washington D.C. , except wastepaper .

Thousands of documents are drafted , approved or denied in the city every day .People living there either belong to the administration or are employed in the service industry .

St10:::I’d like to say that the United States of America is a comparatively young country .I mean its history is about 400 years . And of course everybody knows that America was discovered by Christopher Columbus .He was the first man who proved that Eurasia is not only one continent on the Earth .Since that time America was called The New World .People from the whole Europe who were not satisfied with their believes and way of life immigrated to America in hope to create a new country and to get equal rights .After some time they became independent from England and Spain .and a new country appeared .

St11:George Washington the first President of the USA was born on plantation in Virginia on February 22 1732 at the death of his father George who was then 11 years old was left along with his brother Lawrence and sister in the care of his mother . He went to a little country school where he learned to read and to do sums in arithmetic .

St12:We continue our sightseeing tour . Capitol is the seat of the US Congress. It is situated in Washington D.C. ( District of Columbia ) and is located on a plateau about 30 meters above the level of the Potomac River .The building got it name from the temple in Rome .The construction of the Capitol in Washington D.C. was begun in 1793 . In 1814 British troops burned the interior of the Capitol but after the war the damage was repaired . Some other changes were made and by 1865 the Capitol received the form we see .today .Congress – the Senate and the House of Representatives meets there and makes the laws of the land .

We walked east from the Capitol to the Library of Congress .This huge library has copies of all books with US copyright . Then we crossed east Capitol Street to the Supreme Court .The highest court of the land meets here .

St13:Then we went east on Constitution Avenue to the White House at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue .The White House is the official home of the President in Washington D.C. The place covering 7 hectares land was chosen by president Washington and Pierre L Enfant, French engineer who planned the city. The first cornerstone was laid in 1792 and the first president who moved into the White House in 1800 was John Adams .

St 14: Finally we continued sightseeing tour west to the Washington National Monument .This beautiful monument in honour of George Washington is located in the American capital and is visited by more than two millions people every year .

It’s a tapering white marble shaft 169 meters high .The work of construction was begun in 1848 and it was opened to the public in 1888 .

The monument looks like the obelisks of ancient Egypt .Memorial stones from the 50 states of USA foreign countries ,cities and organizations were put into the interior walls .The top platform is reached by a lift and from there the visitor can enjoy a beautiful panoramic view of American capital

Teacher: In conclusion I must say that for a long time the United States of America continued the politics of none-involvement in European issues .After the World War II and Great Patriotic War the USA began to be more active in world politics and it became one of world’s most powerful nation States .I like Americans because they are very sociable and hospitable. They are very sympathetic people . These qualities of American people displayed in tragedies of 11 th September 2001 .This was the tragic day for the people of the USA and for the whole world .I sympathized them and admired their courage .
