Anatomy & Physiology

Congratulations on having gained a place on the BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy programme!

The study of occupational therapy is underpinned by a basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology and your first year studies will include these subjects.

For those of you who have not studied these subjects before, you may wish to undertake some self study over the next few weeks in order to familiarise yourself with the concepts and the terminology used. If you have studied the subjects before you may wish to take the opportunity to refresh your knowledge!

You may find the following web based resource useful:

This self study is not mandatory and will not be assessed. It is offered as an opportunity for independent learning. Independent learning will form an important part of your studies over the next three years.

In addition, all Occupational Therapy Students will be required to take a Physiology module in the first Semester of Year One, the following advice is given from the Physiology Department:

Students without A-Level Biology or equivalent are strongly advised to study Chapters 1-3 of Martini or Seely, Stephens & Tate or an A-Level Biology textbook in order to familiarise themselves with basic biological terminology and concepts.

Previous students have recommended ʻPhysiology Demystifiedʼ by Dale Layman for people on the course who need a back-to-basics textbook.

The Main Course Textbook is Martini & Nath (2008) Fundamentals of Anatomy and Physiology, 8th edition.
