Notes for THEODORE PHILIP "TED" ROESSNER:

From "The Saga of Sully Flats," by Adeline S. Gnirk, published 1977, by the Gregory Times-Advocate, Gregory, SD, page 273.

Theodore Philip (1907) was born in the one-room sod house on the old homestead. He attended elementary school at the Leonard School on a corner of his grandfather's homestead and received his high school education at Lucas, S.D. He worked with his parents on the farm until he was old enough to go out on his own. Theodore went into the trucking business and was the first trucker in Burke to use and automotive truck instead of the accustomed dray wagon and dray horses. he left South Dakota in 1935 for the west coast where he drove a truck for two years in Oregon. He tried his hand at placer mining in the little town of Jacksonville, Oregon. He then worked in the timber east of Klammath Falls, on the Indian Reservation in the Sugar Pine. There he contracted bronchitis and had to leave Oregon to go to the south California desert. Theodore settled in El Monte, Calif. and was employed by a rock and sand company. In 1941 he was drafted. He served 3 years in the service when he was discharged because of cardiac failure from the Fletcher General Hospital in Cambridge, Ohio. After his discharge from the Army he went bakc to California and became a police officer in the Monterey Park California Police Dept. He could not stand the pressure of that job, so he went into business for himself. He sold plumbing and sewer pipes and added the extra service of delivery. He was in the business for 23 years. In 1968 he sold his business and retired.

In 1943 he was married at Dakota City, Neb. to Hazel Jo Ford of Odessa, Texas. They have one son, James Lindsey and a daughter, Linda Gair. Ted says his wife, Hazel, is a third cousin to Davy Crockett, one of the defenders of the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas, where he fought and was killed. Texas had fought to gain independence from Mexican rule.
