Conclusion

The study of the mind and the brain is a broad and complicated subject area that draws from several interrelated subjects. Some key concepts can be extracted for the graphic designer. The study of colour provides knowledge on its cultural and emotional implications together with appropriate use within graphics. Neuroscience and psychology provides an insight into how visual material is perceived and what can go wrong; colour blindness is of particular importance to the designer, with regard to what can be done to minimize the effects. Psychology also provides an understanding of cognition and how to layout graphics correctly. Semiotics provides the theory for how we understand signs (this includes all graphics), and is discussed in my second essay. Some areas of how the mind and brain function remain poorly understood, such as the more abstract processes involved in creative thinking.
