Dear Sheila,

Thank you for your letter. I was glad to get it so soon!

Of course it’s necessary to be in a good shape, especially before summer when you want to look slim and wonderful. Last year when I returned from a vocation to the Crimea I decided to go on a diet. I wanted to lose weight. I simply controlled what I ate and the results were amazing! I have lost 7 kilos. Isn’t it nice? I think if you do it wisely and choose only healthy food you can achieve your goal. Right now I’m trying to keep fit by going to the gym and doing exercise in the morning. I also go swimming sometimes when I have some spare time. Unfortunately I don’t have much time for swimming. Luckily the swimming pool is situated not far from my house. I often meet friends in the pool.

Anyway If I were you, I would try to explain to your parents all the good points of healthy life. And then by looking wonderful and healthy, show them the results of your lifestyle. Why not to make it a family activity?! Your parents can look healthier and younger too.

Well, that’s about all I can say now. Hope to hear from you soon.

Love

Tanya

Dear Jane!

Thank you for your letter! I am always glad to receive many good news from you.

As far as the films you ask me, I must say that I like watching many kinds of films: war films, historic films, horror films, fantasy films, detectives, love films. But most of all I like comedies because they are interesting and relaxing.

I prefer watching films at the cinema because of the big screen and good sound. But I don’t often go to the cinema because the tickets are expencive.

I think it’s better not to read a book before you watch the film because it’s boring if you know the plot. Sometimes you don’t like the actors because you thought they looked differently.

I look forward to hearing from you

Yours sincerely,

Vadim.

I also prefer to watch historical films because I’m going to enter a historical faculty of our University. To tell the truth I don’t like to read a book before watching the film based on it because it’s not interesting to watch when you know the plot. Besides sometimes I am annoyed because they often change the plot.

Now I’d better get on with my preparing for the exam.

Many parents encourage their children to study well by giving extra pocket money for each good mark. Is it correct to do so? There are different opinions on this problem. Let’s discuss some of them.

Some people think that this is the only way to encourage their children because to study is boring and difficult. Children have different subjects at school. Some of them such as maths and chemistry are very difficult. Some of them like geography and biology are boring. Children work at school all the morning and when they come home they must prepare their homework. So they work almost all day. Perhaps, many parents think that if they are given money for their work, why not to give money to the children for their work? They think the money will make their children to study better because they would like to have money for sweets and different games. Otherwise the children save the money for games not eating breakfast at school.

Unfortunately, this is not true. Firstly, children get used to study only if they are given money. So, their marks become worse and worse if parents can’t give them money every day. Secondly, if there are many children in the family, it’s impossible to give them all money for every good mark when they start going to school. Thirdly, children must study well not for the sake of money but because it’s interesting and because the good knowledge will help them to make a career and to find an interesting work they like.

As for me, I wouldn’t give extra pocket money for each good mark to my children. My parents sometimes gave me money for good marks and it didn’t make me work better. But, I think, it’s right to give children extra pocket money on holidays or when they ask for it. Otherwise they will find different ways to find the money they need themselves.

One of the most important problems nowadays is the problem of studying. Is it right to encorage children to study well by giving pocket money for the good marks?

From the one hand it is a great idea. Parent teach their children to earn their own money. Children try to work hard – and as a result they receive money: big money for good work! It helps to organize “little businessmen” better, to do everything in time. That’s why they become healthier, stronger and receive knowledge at school.

But this issue has also some negative features. Little children need not only to work, but to relax sometimes, play different games, meet with friends etc. Thanks to hard atmosphere (atmosphere of everyday studying) they can damage their health. Besides doing homework all the time children can earn money, but loose all the frends because of lack of communication.

Everyone has his own freedom of choice. That’s why every parent should think about everything beforehand. He or she should take care about her/his child and think about children’s future life, think about details which can help children to go into adult life.

Today you can hardly ever find a teen, who studys well. Some parents prefer to punish their kids. But there are parent who prefer to give extra pocket money for each good mark. Let’s consider some pros and cons of giving extra pocket money for each good mark.

Among arguments for one can name the following. Firstly, studies are jobs of teens, so it’s normal to have some pay for job. Moreover there isn’t any crime in giving extra pocket money by parents. Besides it’s unusual way of influence on teens. So there are many plusies in this.

Among arguments against one can name the following: first of all no one know in what way teen will spend his extra pocket money. He or she could buy, for example, drugs or cigarets. Secondly, to study well, is very important for any children, and they should understand it. Teens should study well for themselves and not for their parents or because of extra pocket money. So, no doubt, giving extra pocket money has many disadvantages.

To drow the conclusion one can say that giving extra pocket money has both plusies and minuses. And it’s up to everybody to decide to give extra pocket money to their children or not.

It is known that the key factor for achieving a good result is motivation. Living in the world where it is possible to buy almost everything some parents think that giving extra pocket money for each good mark is a great encourangement.

On the one hand, the process of studying is long and difficult and is worth of getting a reward. Extra pocket money can make one understand that you need to work hard before getting money. And this will set an example of how to choose a future job. What is more, a diligent student might even spend the money on books, providing the future resources for studying. But on the other hand, children should realize that studying is more necessary for their life than for satisfaction of their parents. Exchanging good grades for money can make children greedy. They might start thinking of their parents as a sourse of money. Instead, parents should teach to be hard-working. If one day parents stop paying, that might become a serious cause for arguings.

All in all, studying well is an important part of upbringing. And each parent should find his/her best way of controlling the situation. And the idea of pocket money is not that bad if there is measure.

Children differ. Some children study better, some children study worse. And many parents encourage their children to study well by giving extra pocket money for each good mark. Is it really a problem?

I think giving pocket money is not so bad. Some children have to become study better because they don’t want to disappoint their parents. Besides they try more when they do homework and answer questions of teachers. Moreover, children begin to understand that their parents don’t wish them any harm, mother and father just try to help in getting of education.

But not all children are the same. Firstly, some children may show to parents good marks, writing by their friend’s hands and get pocket money very easily. After that they spend it on computer games, magazines, may be alcohol, sigarettes, drugs and other useful and dangerous things. Secondly, parents must understand that by buying of good marks they don’t make children learn more. Furthermore, it can be expensive for parents if their children begin to study much better.

It can be noted that that giving pocket money for each good mark is not very big problem, but also it is not a good way to make a child to study better. Parents have to control their children’s learning. Buying of good marks it is not the best choise.

What is your opinion of soap operas?

Write 200-250 words.

Introduction (State the problem)

Express your personal opinion and reasons for it

Many people enjoy watching soap operas and spend all evenings living life of the soap opera characters. Is it really a good way to spend your leisure time?

In my opinion soap operas are the most dull and less interesting product of TV industry. First of all, they are very long and the plot is primitive. I’d better solve my own problems than watch difficulties in other people’s life. Secondly, the acting in such kind of movies is awful. The actors who play in soap operas do not deserve to be called actors, because very often they are not able to act. Thirdly, soap operas are really useless, because they don’t give food for your brain. There is nothing to think about and reflect on in the soap operas.

However, many people find soap operas enjoyable and realistic. They think that these movies state universal problems. I can’t agree with such arguments, because in every soap opera there is only one problem: someone is really ill or perished, and others cry over spilt milk. All emotions are exaggerated in soap operas that’s why I can’t agree with the statement that they are realistic.

To sum up, I am not one of those who enjoy soap operas. I suppose that there are far pleasanter and useful ways of spending free time. I don’t mind of people watching soap operas, but it is certainly not my choice.

Nowadays lots of people watch soap operas. They find them realistic and enjoyable. However, I strongly believe that it is a useless waste of time.

To start with, soap operas have no educational value. They don’t contain any scientific information.

Soap operas can have a negative effect. As they often show murders and robberies.

Finally, there is no artistic value in them. The script is simple, the actors perform badly.

But soap operas help some people to relax. I think soap operas are not worth seeing it’s better to read a book.

It has become common nowadays to watch series and soap operas on TV. They show people’s emotions and passions in a lively manner and make the audience worry and feel happy for its characters. Gradually watching soap operas becomes a mania when distract the spectaters from real life.

Many people think that soap operas are fascinating, thrilling and even educational. They say, that the mistakes of the screen characters teach them not to repeat the same experience. But they forget to mention, that the conditions in which the actors play are developing according to a certain script that is often far from reality.

I believe that watching endless series is a waste of time, because they don’t bring home to us any useful information. Moreover, the actors who play their parts in soap operas don’t really experience the emotions and feelings they show on the screen. Thus, they come out to be fake and too unreal. In addition you can become addicted to watching soap operas and totaly abandon your own life, which is much more interesting than on TV.

All things considered, although soap operas may be imaginative, exciting and enjoyable, they can lead to people’s absolute ignorance of their own life. In my opinion, soap operas should be limited in time or even forbidden, because of the harmful effect they produce on a person.

It must be admitted that watching soap operas is becoming more and more popular with every year. Some people find them interesting, realistic and worth seeing. Others consider watching them to be a waste of time. In my composition I am going to express my personal opinion on the matter and debate with my opponents.

As for my opinion, I consider soap operas to be dull and boring. They are not interesting because the events depicted seldom happen in reality. Besides watching soap operas takes plenty of time that might be used for better purposes. And finally, soap operas are harmful to the mind of people who is fond of them because the mind is seriously stupefied.

However, some people disagree. They believe that soap operas are a wonderful means of relaxation that can help to forget about daily routine. Frankly speaking, I do not consider this argument to be convincing because it is impossible to relax watching heroes’ sufferings. What is more, your mind full of scandals, crimes and rows as it’s shown there. What’s more, some people watch soaps in order to compare them with their own life, which seems absolutely impossible to me, because their aim is to produce an effective image, but not to show our real life. In addition, they find soap operas rather relaxing and watch them to get away from everyday routine, but they are not right, because there exist a lot of programmes, which are more interesting, entertaining and educating than soaps.

To crown it all, I’m convinced that soap operas aren’t worth watching being uninteresting and artificial.

Many people watch soap operas because they are enjoyable and realistic. For some of us soap operas are a chance to enter the world of imagination and constant delight, but for others it is source of annoyance and stress.

I think that soap operas have their advantages. Firstly, it is only way to spend free time for many lonely and elderly people. Sometimes characters of soap operas may become their true close friends. Furthermore, it would not be exagiration to say that watching cereals helps us to relax, rejoy and to forget all the stresses and worries of the rest of the world.

But still there exist the reverse side of the coin. Some people think that watching soap operas is killing of the time. They say cereals are useless, filthy and irrelevant to real life.

The problem is that sometimes people don’t differentiate reality and life in soap operas. They are writing letters to heroes of cereals congratulating them on birthdays and anniversaries.

People forget about their own life and live lifes that heros of soap operas want them to live!

But still, taking all things into consideration I can not agree with those people who are against soap operas. Every person must have a choice what programme to watch and what life to live. So let us give society a chance to decide whether to watch soap operas or not!
