  • Explain how the structure of histological tissues relates to their function

  • Explain the process and symptoms of acute and chronic inflammation

  • Describe the anatomy and physiology of the cardiovascular and respiratory systems

  • Relate the pathological changes of cardiovascular and respiratory conditions to the clinical features

  • Explain the indications and contraindications of specified physiotherapy techniques

  • Outline the physiotherapeutic management for problems identified

Syllabus Outline:

Cardiovascular and Respiratory Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology

Structure of epithelium, generalised connective tissue and blood
Structure of Heart and blood vessels Structure of lungs and bronchi

Control of respiration, Ventilation, Diffusion and Transport of blood gases

Control of Flow, resistance and blood pressure

Tissue fluid formation, oedema, Inflammation, and healing

Cardiovascular - conditions affecting heart and blood vessels (Heart failure, DVT, Atherosclerosis, shock, myocardial infarction)
Medical respiratory conditions (Asthma, COPD, Bronchiectasis, Cystic Fibrosis)
Post operative abdominal surgery management
Physiotherapy Examination and Assessment skills for Cardio Respiratory assessment

Auscultation, observation of breathing pattern, Spirometry, Oximetry and Capnography, Blood pressure monitoring, TPR measurement and charting

Physiotherapy treatment skills:
ACBT, manual clearance techniques, postural drainage, control of breathlessness, post operative management


Clinical reasoning for case studies with cardiovascular and respiratory problems


Teaching and Learning Methods:

A variety of approaches will be used which may include:

Lectures

Problem solving seminars

Practical manual handling skills demonstration and supervised practice

Use of workbooks for directed study


Reading strategy


Indicative Sources:

Students will be given detailed workbooks as a basis for their learning, and will be expected to supplement this by referring to a comprehensive physiology textbook and current respiratory physiotherapy textbooks and websites


Assessment:


Where necessary, and appropriate, an alternative medium of assessment may be negotiated.
