FOREWORD

Despite the development of new technologies such as combinatorial chemistry, high throughput screening, bioinformatics, natural products provide crucial, unmatched chemical diversity as well as wide range of pharmacological activities to modern drug discovery programmes.

Medicinal plants have contributed to significant lead molecules to the pharmaceutical industry. Naturally-occurring drugs such as vinblastine/ vincristine, artemisinine and taxol would not have been discovered by synthetic chemists. It is also judicious to note the increasing popularity of botanicals among consumers in the West. Current market estimates indicate that the figures are approaching billions of dollars in sales of these products.

The purpose of the Symposium is to bring stakeholders from diverse scientific fields on a single platform to discuss and resolve issues directly related to biodiversity and drug development, as they are intrinsically linked. Biodiversity-diverse countries lie essentially in the south and it is there that we are witnessing the biggest pressure on their unique flora and fauna. There is therefore a pressing need to address issues such as biodiversity conservation, protection of traditional knowledge, validation of ethnobotanical information, bioprospecting, etc. Marine natural products must also be looked into in the quest for new biomolecules as they remain an untapped reserve of compounds new to scientists and with potential pharmacological activities.

Malaria afflicts mainly populations in the Sub-Sahara Africa. While quinine came from the South American biodiversity, and artemisinine from the Asian biodiversity, we hope that the third antimalarial breakthrough will come from an African plant.

I therefore welcome you to this Symposium hoping that you will find the program stimulating with ideas that will help you in your researches when you return to your institutes. Also feel welcome to Antananarivo and Madagascar; I hope you will take the opportunity to sample the environment here in the city and beyond for your life memories and return to our country many more times.

Philippe Rasoanaivo

Chairman, Organising committee
