RFCD: 4301 - HISTORICAL STUDIES

Title: The bishop as letter-writer: pastoral care and civic administration in Christian antiquity

Summary:

This project builds on internationally recognised research over the past seven years which has established the significance of the relationship between preacher and audience as a source for everyday life in Christian antiquity. The study of episcopal correspondence surviving in Greek and Syriac has given evidence of the preacher-audience relationship outside the church as well, and is providing a fuller picture of the role on the bishop-preacher in pastoral care and civic administration. In this phase of the project, Latin letters (Cyprian of Carthage) and Coptic and Arabic letters and Greek fragments (Severus of Antioch) will be studied.

RFCD: 4202 - LITERATURE STUDIES

Title: Text and Intellectual Ritual in China: Twentieth Century Readings of The Red Chamber Dream (Honglou meng) and the Postmodern Challenge

Summary:

The project develops a new model for conceptualising Hongxue--the history of studies of The Red Chamber Dream (Honglou meng)--the single most important literary text in twentieth century China. National political and intellectual leaders used rereadings of the text to achieve crucial social goals. The existing model assumes an erroneous trichotomous division--Old Hongxue, New Hongxue and focuses on notions of social responsibility in literary criticism and discloses the naturalised intellectual practices of Hongxue. This meta-critique will establish a new schema explaining the socio-cultural role of the text.
