DESIGN OF VLSI CIRCUITS (BC-172602)

Contents:

 Introduction to VLSI design – motivation for IC design, IC design process, design abstraction levels, CAD tools, elements of system specification and design.

 Combinational logic design, logic minimization, synchronous sequential logic design. Finite state machines, Mealy and Moore models, Designing with programmable logic devices ROM, PLA, PAL, PLD.

 A synchronous sequential logic- analysis procedure, state minimization, state assignment, static and dynamic hazards.

 

Introduction to VHDL – basic concepts in VHDL, language features, types of VHDL description – structural, data flow and behavioral descriptions of hardware, combinational and sequential design examples using VHDL.

 Features and internal structure of CPLDs, FPGAs, designing with CPLDs and FPGAs. Introduction to IC floor planning and testing, design for testability, combinational logic testing, sequential logic testing, ATPG, boundary scan, built in self test.

DIGITAL SYSTEM DESIGN (BC-172603)

Contents:

The course focuses on the use of hardware description languages such as VHDL/Verilog in the design of digital systems for platform-independent design. Target implementation platform include both ASIC (standard cell design) and FPGAs. High-level design tools will be introduced for specification, simulation, and synthesis. The course will introduce design methodologies such as top-down synthesis approach, Hierarchical and abstraction concepts, HDL for synthesis, design for testability. Specialized application and specific VLSI/FPGA architectures will be discussed.

Contents:

VLSI Test Concepts. Broad introduction to basic concepts, techniques, and tools of modern VLSI testing. Fundamentals of defect modeling, fault simulation, design for testability, built-in self test techniques, and failure analysis. Test economics, physical defects and fault modeling, automated test pattern generation, fault simulation, design for test, build-in self test, memory test, PLD test, mixed signal test, Iddq test, boundary scan and related standards, test synthesis, diagnosis and failure analysis, automated test equipment, embedded core test.
