Gi Cave - (Red, Cloud, Barret) - party (B-route possible to the end (Attack Squad and Ultima Weapon battles)

Emerald Weapon's worst nightmare ^^

Yeah, I could dodge Bad Breath's effects, but after the results of my first attempt, namely every status of Bad Breath hitting every character, I felt somewhat discouraged from the task. If the Sleep status didn't hit just one character, then I'd have a shot, but kinda late now. *shrugs* I'll give it another try on Disc 3, Tsuki.

Well, better now than never. I tried the Lost Materia quest with Cid as my party leader. All I can say is, good thing I snuck in earlier and bought an extra 20 Fire Veils and Swift Bolts.

Rapps

Cid: L39, Materia- none

Barret: L37, Materia- none

Red XIII: L38, Materia- none

Strategy: Not a hard battle persay, but the first one in a long time to keep me on my toes. Unfortunately, I hadn't picked up any items to give me Barrier or M-Barrier status, so I came in pretty vulnerable. His physical, though often multi-hitting, wasn't too bad, as it only hit for ~200 each time. However, Aero3 tore me a new one with its devastating ~1500 damage (at least it was only ST damage). Due to his rather hasty speed, I was left with the task of keeping all my party members well between 1500 and 2000 HP with little more to work with than an abundancy of Hi-Potions, all while hitting Rapps for a depressing ~250 via an alternation between Swift Bolts and Fire Veils.

Ultimate Weapon

Cid: L41, Materia- ESM#1, Sense (L1)

Yuffie: L43, Materia- ESM#2, Manipulate (L1)

Red XIII: L40, Materia- ESM#3, Sense (L1), Steal (L1)

Strategy: Big Guard ASAP. Good thing too: Quake2 would have hit for ~1200 and Ultima Beam for a staggering ~1800. After White Winding too >.>, I was only able to get in a couple potshots before he ran off.

Carry Armor

Cloud: L46, Materia- ESM#3, Manipulate (L1)

Vincent: L46, Materia- ESM#1, Sense (L1)

Cait Sith: L46, Materia- ESM#2, Sense (L1), Steal (L1)

Strategy: >.o Lapis Laser stung (~1600)! Fortunately, Magic Breath's there to save the day! After Big Guard, I let loose a barrage of Magic Breaths (~2800) that quickly took out his arms (he only grabbed Cait Sith... and for less than a turn), Magic Hammered him to recover a little MP and to put an end to those annoying Lapis Lasers, and finished him off with more Magic Breaths (although, admittedly, Trine would have been sufficient against an innocuous target).

Don't forget... you can use Tranquilizer to put party into the Sadness (Reduce damage to 1/3).

*blinks* **** it! No wonder enemy damage figures have been so high lately! I've been forgetting about Tranquilizers. I started off checking to see that I was in Sadness all the time, but I've been slacking at it lately. The past few battles would have been an even bigger breeze if only I'd remembered. >_<

Thanks for that list Tsuki but why in the world is Tifa listed as level 7 against the Mighty Grunts and Sample HO512??? I'm sure I can get there with a level 4 Tifa....

Anyway playtime is over I have to study again, but I'll come back to this challenge eventually....>_>

Whooops, my mistake >_<;

Of course Tifa can be level 4 at those battles.

Diamond Weapon

Cloud: L47, Materia- ESM#3, Manipulate (L1)

Vincent: L47, Materia- ESM#1, Sense (L1)

Cait Sith: L47, Materia- ESM#2, Sense (L1), Steal (L1)

Strategy: >_> That was easy. With all my defenses up, his damage barely topped ~300. Certainly a long battle, considering all the Magic Breaths (~1800) I had to cast, but by no means hard.

Ultimate Weapon (Random Encounters)

Cloud: L49, Materia- ESM#1, Manipulate (L1)

Vincent: L49, Materia- ESM#2, Sense (L1)

Cait Sith: L49, Materia- ESM#3, Sense (L1), Steal (L1)

Strategy: Spam Magic Breath (~2800) until he ran away, giving no regards to the HP of my characters. Without the Big Guard, his attacks hurt a little, but not all that much (Ultima Beam ~1200, Quake2 ~800, Claw ~500, Energyball ~900).

Ultimate Weapon (Final Battle)

Cloud: L49, Materia- Sense (L1), Manipulate (L1)

Vincent: L49, Materia- Sense (L1), Steal (L1)

Cait Sith: L49, Materia- ESM#1, ESM#2, ESM#3

Strategy: Big Guard, followed by Magic Breaths. Meanwhile, Cloud and Vincent would throw around Hi-Potions and Ethers. Once Ulty was one hit away from death, I pulled a quicky on him, both Ethering him and using a Mirror on myself. Then I Magic Breathed him, he cast Shadow Flare, it bounced off Cait Sith, and I got the kewl death along with Shadow Flare on all my Enemy Skills.

BAH! Level limit broken! >_> *thinks of a contigency plan* Well, I'll leave it suspended for now, do some stuff that I probably wouldn't have been able to do otherwise, and think of how to solve the problem when writing it all up later.

Oh, and as for why I was chasing Ulty in the first place, it's because I plan on chasing his bigger, badder brother. ;P

Pagoda

Yuffie: L46, Matera- ESM#1, Sense (L1) x2, Steal (L1), Manipulate (L1)

Gorky

Shake

Strategy: 2 Shadow Flares (~2500) per floor did the trick.

Chekhov

Staniv

Yuffie: L46 -> L47

Strategy: 3 Shadow Flares (~2500) per floor worked here. The only annoyance was Chekhov's Stare Down.

Godo

Strategy: Again, 3 Shadow Flares (~4200) took down the big guy

Reno and Rude (Gelnika)

Cloud: L51, Materia- ESM#3, Manipulate (L1)

Vincent: L51, Materia- ESM#1, Sense (L1), Steal (L1)

Cait Sith: L51, Materia-, ESM#2, Sense (L1)

Strategy: Another Turk battle. The only thing I had to do was act immediately after Reno's turn, to avoid getting hit by Neo Turk Light. Otherwise, it was a breeze. *Magic Breaths*

Elena, Reno, and Rude

Cloud: L53, Materia- ESM#1, Manipulate (L1)

Vincent: L53, Materia- ESM#2, Sense (L1), Steal (L1)

Cait Sith: L53, Materia- ESM#3, Sense (L1), W-Item (L1)

Strategy: Easier than the last fight; all I had to do was avoid Elena's infrequent confusion attack and I was fine. The only irritation was being forced to stick with Aqualung, slowing the battle up a bit.

Proud Clod

Cloud: L54, Materia- ESM#1, Manipulate (L1)

Vincent: L54, Materia- ESM#2, Sense (L1), Steal (L1)

Cait Sith: L54, Materia- ESM#3, Sense (L1), W-Item (L1)

Strategy: Pathetic. After Big Guard, none of its attacks topped ~200. After Magic Breathing away the Jammar Armor, I switched to ???? (after Magic Hammering away his MP) to finish him. No danger here, at all.

Final Disc 2 Battle

Cloud: L55, Materia- ESM#1, Manipulate (L1)

Vincent: L55, Materia- ESM#2, Sense (L1), Steal (L1)

Cait Sith: L55, Materia- ESM#3, Sense (L1), W-Item (L1)

Hojo

Strategy: As usual, a warm-up. A Big Guard, a few Shadow Flares and Magic Hammers, and I'm off to the second battle.

Helletic Hojo

Strategy: Considering the ridiculous number of status effects at his disposal, I chose the most direct (even if not the wisest) course of action: I blitzed the main body with Shadow Flares (~4000-~4500). Hojo didn't really do much though. >_> Kinda just sat there for most of the battle, infrequently tossing out a Bio Gas. Guess I should feel lucky Confu didn't make an appearance. Otherwise, I'd have been in huge trouble.

Lifeform-Hojo N

Strategy: Not that bad really. Once I Magic Hammered his MP to take care of that pesky Silence, all he had was the ST Combo, whose status attacks I could White Wind away. So, every turn I had two characters Shadow Flare (~4000-~4500) while the remaining one prepared to White Wind (even if the counter Combo didn't always work as planned, >.> well, I was prepared for that too).

Ruby Weapon

# of Resets: Still rising

Cloud: L56, Materia- ESM#3, Manipulate (MASTER)

Vincent: L56, Materia- ESM#1, Sense (MASTER), Steal (L2)

Cait Sith: L56, Materia- ESM#2, Sense (MASTER), W-Item (L1)

Strategy: And thus begins my might Ruby Weapon battle. Per usual, I entered with two allies dead, and Cait Sith worked quickly to revive them. My first priority: Eliminate his MP. After Big Guarding (more for the Haste status than anything else; as such, any time someone is killed, I'll cast Big Guard again, for orientation and timing purposes in addition to, ya know, being able to hit him more between Dazers >_>), I Dazered him and started Magic Hammering away his MP (Ultima, his only MT attack had easliy wiped me out in my previous run against him). By my estimation, I can get in, at most, 5 moves in during his paralysis before I have to have my W-Item guy Dazer him again and undo the damage of whatever happened on the field as a result of Ruby's newly found freedom. This Magic Hammer phase is the riskiest, as there is a chance Ruby could just wipe me out with Ultima before I finish sapping him of his power. Still, everything went successfully, and, after 25 Magic Hammers, I switched to my primary (a.k.a. only) form of good damage: ????. At optimal conditions, I was smacking Ruby for ~17000 every time I paralyzed him. Everything was going great, perfectly accordingly to plan... up to around after the 35ish Dazer when the ******* did something I didn't know he could do: He Whirlsanded Cloud when his tentacles were in the ground. As I watch my little chibi-Cloud funnel into oblivion, the only response I could formulate was: "WTF?!" Still, according to my calculations, I could still finish the battle with my present item bag, so Vincent and Cait Sith continued to fight valiantly, hitting Ruby for a less impressive ~10000 per paralysis (now I could only get in 3 hits per paralysis, mind you). Then... again... Whirlsand: Vincent this time. Cait Sith fought on... but died to a stray Ruby Ray.

One question to anyone who can answer: What triggers Whirlsand when Ruby's tentacles are in the ground?

hehe... I dont know what triggered Whirlsand, may be it's random action after number of turns.

You know, you have a way to greatly raise damage to Ruby Weapon.... Chocobucle and 9999 runs from battles -)

If only, Tsuki, if only. Chocobuckle is the only Enemy Skill which is literally impossible for me to obtain in this challenge (Chocobo Lure being Independent Materia and all).

Since I'm on the subject, New Enemy Skills:

ESM#1- L5 Death (Parasite), Dragon Force (Dark Dragon), Angel Whisper (Pollensalta), Roulette (Death Dealer), Pandora's Box (Dragon Zombie)

ESM#2- L5 Death (Parasite), Dragon Force (Dark Dragon), Angel Whisper (Pollensalta), Roulette (Death Dealer), Pandora's Box (Dragon Zombie)

ESM#3- L5 Death (Parasite), Dragon Force (Dark Dragon), Angel Whisper (Pollensalta), Roulette (Death Dealer), Pandora's Box (Dragon Zombie), Laser (Dark Dragon)

So, yeah, I know every Enemy Skill now except Chocobuckle and Bad Breath. I think I should beat Safer first, then power up and challenge Ruby again; I don't want to be too strong when fighting Sephy after all.

In regards to the whole Whirlsand thing, I have checked the Enemy Mechanics guide, and I think I may have found the mechanical cause, but, as I'm somewhat inexperienced in reading the more technical sections of enemy AI, I'm having trouble deciphering the problem. Elucidation on the issue would be very helpful. *looks around at people*

According to Terence's Enemy Mechanics FAQ (If I read correctly :-P ):

Tentacles are not in the ground:

third and sixth turns(100% chance)

as counter(100% chance)

Tentacles are in the ground:

26th ~ 32nd turns and players > 2(100% chance)

after 32nd turns and players > 1(100% chance)

I think there is no way to avoid it in a LONG Ruby battle :-(

Have you tried tossing a Spider Web at him? Slow makes Paralysis last twice as long, and at the slowest battle speed it would make a huge difference.

What was I thinking? >_> Even if I had Chocobuckle, it wouldn't make a difference. I'm playing with "NE".

Bah, that's exactly what I thought "Count" was referring to.
