You will have to Beta at this point. To learn Beta, you will need Planet Protector.

Ah, ok. As said before, that's the only real concrete problem I'd seen for the challenge. Blitzing him was the only other way to do it without healing, so far as I could see, but I didn't know with what and had simply dismissed Beta as a possibility because I couldn't think of any way to get it. So... letting Aeris get all those kills for Planet Protector rather than allow Barret to heal. Hm, makes sense, seeing that Aeris' level won't exactly have a bearing on the final levels.

*looks at the other stuff* As suspected, highly luck-based too. As for Gi Nattak, >.> he was spoken of so highly that I merely assumed that the idea of fighting him conventionally was viewed as a psychotic fantasy.

Oh, and I'll read your posts later. I don't know what's wrong, but I can't stare at the screen for more than half an hour before my eyes start to hurt. Maybe I should get my eyes checked? It's never been like this before. Earlier, I could spend the whole day in front of the screen.... Not that I do that very often, but at least I was able to.

Ouch, sorry about the eye problems, Garland. I've never heard about anything quite like that before; getting it checked out sounds like a good idea.

*modifies and makes unambiguous his challenge*

LL50IENANPANLBCMO Challenge

Level Limit 50 (at max, 40ish being preferable), Initial Equipment, No Accessories, No Physical Attacks, No Limit Breaks, Command Materia Only Challenge

In terms of materia, by the additional rules, I'm limited to Steal (minus Mug), Sense, Enemy Skill, Manipulate, Mime, and W-Item (minus W-Item trick, for anti-cheapness purposes). Otherwise, Deathblow, Morph, Double Cut, W-Summon, W-Magic, and Slash-All are banned. The only thing I'm not sure about is Throw. The Throw command definitely seems to be PAish (considering you're throwing a weapon >_>), and Coin does as well, to a similar extent. Banning Throw entirely sounds like the best plan.

As with before, the challenge starts after Motor Ball, primarily because an IO all throughout Midgar along with all the additional stipulations sounds rather dubious, not in terms of difficulty, but in terms of the capacity of my item bag. So many consecutive bosses without a break to get more items... and the whole "crap equipment and decent (at best) levels" thing.

Anyways, >_> the additional stipulations sorta balance out what I took away. At the very least, it's harder than what I had before and is clearer.

I've started. Nothing of note really, considering it's just a regular game until after leaving Midgar. Up to Air Buster, yeah... >_> No worries though, I'll get to full steam after tomorrow *has two mid-terms tomorrow*.

Sorry for not bumping in here often. But i beat my SCIENM challenge 3 days ago. I only had to attempt Safer sephy 6 times. I beat him at lvl 99. My stratedgy for him was to just use omnislash and after that i would heal until i got omnislash again. It t took me about 61 hours of actual gameplay, and about 80 hours all together. But i thought it was a fun and daring challenge. My next challenge will probably be SCIENML1L, if its possible i dont know. Even though its only adding one thing, ( level one limits only ) i hate to think how hard sephy and carry armor would be without omnislash.

Yup, although it does make my job infinitely easier no matter what way you look at it. I tried retaining as much difficulty as possible with the other restricting stipulations, >_> but well, the power to use the Item command is still enormous.

One thing I forgot to mention, even if it's fairly obvious: Although Mime is technically allowed, because Chocobo Lure is banned, my only ways of accessing Mime is via either Emerald or Ruby. <_< I'll handle it when the time comes. For now, I'm up to Junon.

New Enemy Skills:

ESM#1: + Matra Magic (Custom Sweeper), L4 Suicide (Mu), Flame Thrower (Ark Dragon)

A favor: Can anyone point me to a document that lists randoms by area so that I can cross-reference them for their levels, steals, weaknesses, etc. in another document?

^No need to cross-reference. Terence's Enemy Mechanics FAQ has all that information, though you might want to check out the Training/Random Encounters FAQ for its advice on general preparations for an area.

dinky: If you know how to deal with Arm Grab, Carry Armor isn't dangerous at all. Basically, you need to throw a Swift Bolt and leave the arms alone for the rest of the battle. That way, they have only a miniscule chance of using Arm Grab. Sadness and Lunar Curtains help to make Lapis Laser less painful. For attacking, use Climhazzard and S-Mines on the body.

With Ribbons allowed, Safer shouldn't be very tough. You'll need either Lunar Curtains or Mirrors (preferably the latter), and lots of them, to deal with Shadow Flare and Break, but if you know his movement pattern you should be quite safe. Sadness is very important, as it can save thousands of damage from some of Safer's attacks. The only unpredictable element is a critical hit from his wing attack, and if you are immune to paralysis you can survive even that every time. In SCNMIENANE my Cloud spent virtually the entire battle as a frog, so I can say with certainty that you don't need Omnislash.

Hooray! *dance of joy*

Didn't mention randoms, but a couple Matra Magics took out most enemy groups, and lone enemies fell easily enough to Flame Thrower and Grenades. BTW, >_> what offensive items would you guys consider to be categorized as "physical"? I'm not too sure about Grenades, and I could always just go back to the point where I first started using e.g. Grenades.

Other notes, everyone's in the Back Row and in Sadness, again for obvious reasons. Found, defeated, and recruited Yuffie. As she's the highest leveled party member I had, I transferred ESM#1 from Cloud to her (plus, you know, she by far had the highest Magic stat).

I stocked up on Potions, Tranquilizers, and Grenades in Junon.

Bottomswell

Cloud: L14, Materia- Sense L1

Yuffie: L17, Materia- ESM#1, Sense L1

Red XIII: L14, Materia- Steal L1

Strategy 1 (Grenade): Easy enough. Cloud and Red XIII tossed Grenades (~140) while Yuffie Flame Throwered(~220) Bottomswell. Otherwise, Yuffie Flame Throwered Waterpolos put up on Cloud or Red XIII. When Yuffie got hit, >_> well, I continued attacking until Bottomswell approached near-death and revived the now dead Yuffie via Phoenix Down. Bottomswell's damage was overall unimpressive, with all his ST and MT damage maxing out at ~40.

Strategy 2 (Non-Grenade): Composed because I'm not sure what to make of Grenades as of yet. Not too different from the last one, other than the slower pace and the need of an Ether on Yuffie. Cloud and Red XIII weren't quite reduced to sacks of meat, as they could toss Potions around, but it just made an easy battle easier.

Grenade, Molotov (add fire damage), Right Arms, S-Mine, 8-inch Cannon.

If you have Steal not banned, you can steal Right Arms from the Bomb, at North Corel bridge.

LLLESC update. Made quite a bit of progress during the last two days.

Stingers: Minied. Ohnoes, 1 damage physicals and gravity attacks that can't kill.

Gi Nattak: Didn't feel like being even remotely fair. Second Phoenix Down killed him.

Materia Keeper (2 resets):

Okay, I first thought I could win slowly but surely, so I used all my double growth stuff and Materia I wanted to raise. This plan met an end very late in the fight as I ate a Hell Combo critical (didn't know THAT could happen) for 540 damage.

Okay, I made an actual battle plan here, consisting of poisoning him, then keeping him paralyzed with limits and Choco-Mog as much as possible, while keeping HP above 320 at all times.

So I eat a Hell Combo critical on turn 2. Splat.

Try 3, he opens with Trine for a grand total of 0 damage, I learn it, then poison him and kill him without him getting a Hell Combo crit or even being able to heal.

Palmer:

Hey, his damage is almost a 2HKO in this challenge!!! Pity that he's Cross-Slash bait and even worse, runs out of MP after 10 shots and can't crit. A complete joke, as always.

Red Dragon:

Equip Fire Ring. Keep Barrier up at all times, Haste at the beginning of the fight. The only thing to watch out for is his bite criticaling, which can do 400 damage. Not much to this fight, killed him slowly with my double materia growth setup. He's Cross-Slash and Poison bait, though I didn't use the latter.

Demon's Gate(1 reset):

I get killed in 2 rounds on my first try.

Anyway, my setup is as follows.

Yoshiyuki/Dragon Armlet/Jem Ring

HP Plus/MP Plus

Time/Barrier/Restore/Bahamut/Long Range/Counter Attack

So, I have around 650 HP. Falling rocks does ~230 damage to Barriered Cloud, Cave-In deals ~90, and Demon Rush ~290.

The first thing to do is to cast Barrier, keep HP above 500 at all times after that to survive double falling rocks or a critical (can't do anything about both of them happening at once though >_>), cast Haste, and make sure you always recast your Barrier and don't let Demon's Gate hit an unprotected Cloud even once.

For damage, Bahamut was one shot of 1600 damage, Yoshiyuki physicals and Cross-Slashes did 500 damage. Counter Attack was a huge help here, I had to heal after every damage tech that was not Cave-In. I had a lot of luck with counters too: the rate seemed more like 50% than 20%.

Okay, so the battle was uneventful for the most part, except the very end. I had already done 9000 damage to him. Okay, so my Barrier is almost down already, and I'm at 350 HP. I see him advancing to Demon Rush next turn...and my fingers accidentally press circle and choose Attack. "500 HP away from killing him, and I lose the whole battle making a stupid mistake", I think to myself. He Demon Rushes, and miraculously, *misses*. I thank the RNG for this (never seen that move miss before) and breathe a sigh of relief as I finish off the vile Gate.

Jenova-Life: The hardest part of this battle was that I had to sacrifice two Ethers to get her to use Aqualung. I think you can figure out my "strategy". >_>

*redid everything up to Junon*

*acquires ESM#2*

Too bad I won't be able to get anything on it for a while. =/

Jenova Birth

Cloud: L15, Materia- ESM#2, Sense L1

Yuffie: L17, Materia- ESM#1, Sense L1

Red XIII: L15, Materia- Steal L1

Strategy: Fairly long and annoying but not hard. Tail Laser smacked me for ~50, and all his ST damage hit anywhere between ~60 and ~70 *shakes fist at Jenova often acting twice a turn*. Yuffie of course diligently Flame Throwered (~180) the sucker while Cloud and Red XIII seemed eternally occupied juggling Potions (almost ran out of 'em too, when I had started with 30). I'm guessing Jenova targets whoever attacked last with Stop, as Yuffie was always the unfortunate victim. Lucky for me, Stop often missed, permitting Yuffie to continue with the assault.

I'm climbing Mt. Corel now and have pretty much been exclusively attacking with Matra Magic.
