Foreword

Support for research and technology developments for work and business in the new global networked economy is one of the most exciting and important responsibilities of the European Commission as we enter the 21st century. The dramatic changes we see every day give us the expectation of new opportunities and a new prosperity, but with the anxiety of entering unknown territory: will this new economy give us the sustained growth and prosperity we believe is possible? What work will we do? And how will we do it in 10 years time?

In 2000, the Member States of the European Union adopted a strategy for accelerated development of the knowledge economy with the objective for Europe “to become the most competitive and dynamic knowledge-based economy in the world, capable of sustained economic growth, with more and better jobs, and greater social cohesion”.

This puts the mastery of eWork and eBusiness at the top of Europe’s priorities, and this Key Action at the centre of the eEurope Action plan and its follow-up.

This updated document is part of a series describing the Key Action on New Methods of Work and Electronic Commerce. It covers all projects supported following the calls for proposals 4, 5 and 6 in 2001.

As a “Snapshot” of the Key Action II in November 2001, this report provides factual information, and will help projects to better work in co-operation and synergy with others in the Key Action. This report will also serve as background information for the evaluation and selection of further proposals submitted in response to the seventh and eight calls for proposals.

This report will be regularly updated and re-issued as the Key Action develops. It is available in printed form and from the Internet Web site for the IST programme - http://www.cordis.lu/ist/ka2/welcome.html
