Course Description: This course utilizes a multi-skill approach: listening, speaking, reading, and writing and is designed for beginners or those with a weak background in Russian.




Statement of Prerequisites: None




Goal: To enable students to understand, speak, and read simple Russian and to give students an appreciation of the Russian language.




Outcomes: Outcomes: To meet the national standards (ACTFL Novice Low), students will

  • achieve the ACTFL Novice-Low speaking standard

  • Russian alphabet

  • Formal and Informal speech situations

  • Grammatical gender

  • Possessive pronouns чей, мой, твой , наш, ваш, его, её, and их

  • The propositional case.

  • The verb to be in Russian present tense sentences.

  • Nominative plural of nouns.

  • Pronouns он, она,оно,and они

  • Nominative case of adjectives

  • Что vs. какой

  • Introduction and giving information about yourself

  • Naming common objects

  • Reading and listening to ads

  • Verb conjugation: present, and past tense

  • Position of adverbial modifiers

  • Talking about nationalities

  • Prepositional case of singular and plural modifiers and nouns

  • Conjunctions: И, А, Но

  • Making presentations about yourself

  • The 8-letter spelling rule

  • На каком курсе...?

  • На + prepositional case for location

  • Accusative case of modifiers and nouns

  • Prepositional case of question words and personal pronouns

  • Conjunctions: где, что, как, потому что

Methodology: Listen for comprehension, begin to produce original conversation, begin to read, begin to write, and take tests.




Evaluation Criteria: 90-100=A, 80-89=8, 70-79=C, 60-69=0; 115 reading, 1/5 oral comprehension, 1/5 vocabulary, 1/5 tests, and 1/5 workbook. On-time arrival, daily lesson preparation, participation in class, completed home work assignments, and regular class attendance. More than 3 unexcused absences will result in a lower grade.
