Forthcoming Symposium: Gender Identity, Dubrovnik, Croatia
Janet Jamieson (Liverpool John Moores University, UK) and Richard Hester (Open University, UK) are organising a symposium on gender identity and transgression at the Inter-University Centre Dubrovnik (http://www.iuc.hr/) from 11-15th June 2012.
The symposium will be organised around the following theme/s:
An exploration of the intersections of identity, gender, class, ‘race’ and culture are ...all necessary prerequisites to any serious investigation into how young people may come into conflict with the law. Perhaps long overdue, this year’s Symposium will be devoted to the consideration of gender, social control and youth justice. In particular, it will seek to address the dominant discourses of femininities and masculinities in which young people’s offending and transgressive behaviour is constructed; the relationship of gender identities to social and crime control strategies; the adequacy of state responses to young people’s gendered experiences in relation to crime; and the principles and elements necessary to promote an engendered youth justice.
Essentially it is envisaged that the symposium will provide a forum to discuss research, work and ideas on the issues of gender, social control and youth justice with a view to publication in the IUC’s journal ‘Dialogue in Praxis: A Social Work International Journal’. http://www.dialogueinpraxis.net/index.php?id=8&lang=en Of course the IUC and Dubrovnik provide a very beautiful and relaxing setting to undertake such discussion and hopefully to plan some interesting future projects.
If you are interested in attending this symposium please email Janet Jamieson: firstname.lastname@example.org
