Research and Development



1. Main Research Topics.


1) Sedimentology and low-temperature diagenesis of the Lower Cambrian clays in Baltic Paleobasin – investigations on the smectite-to-illite transformation mechanism and isotope dating of the unconsolidated Lower Cambrian clays. This research has revealed the importance of the kinetic factors on the illitization in old, shallowly buried sedimentary basins. I am fully responsible for analyses, interpretation and discussion in all papers listed under this theme.

2) Mineralogical and geochemical processes in meteorite impacts. – this theme includes research on meteorite impact craters geology, impact mineralogy and post-impact hydrothermal processes. Particularly, I am working with the problems of structural transformation and authigenesis of alumosilicate minerals in impact processes. My part in papers listed is related to the mineralogical - fluid-inclusion analyses, interpretation and discussion.

3) Mineralogy, petrophysical properties and fluid composition of the reservoir rocks – properties and diagenetic evolution of the Lower-Palaeozoic oil, gas and groundwater reservoir rocks of the Baltic Paleobasin. Mineral-fluid reactions in reservoir rocks - mechanism and influence on reservoir properties. I am responsible in published papers for petrological-mineralogical analyses and for complex mineralogical-petrophysical- hydrogochemical interpretation and discussion

4) Geochemistry and mineralogy of weathering of the mining/industrial wastes – in this developing field we are investigating the environmental impact of the potentially toxic mining and industrial waste weathering products. We are studying mineralogical-geochemical processes, which control the waste weathering and consequently determine environmental quality of leachates now and in future. In the paper I am responsible for mineralogical analyses and interpretation of data.

I have supervised since 1993 more than 25 course works and BSc. theses. Three of them (R. Kikas, J. Kaasik ja O. Rakkaselg), have been awarded by student research awards of Ministry of Education of Estonian Republic, Estonian Academy of Sciences and local government of Tartu town.


Currently I am supervising 3 PhD projects by R. Kikas (Illite-smectite diagenesis of K-bentonites of Baltic Paleobasin: age and mechanisms), E. Verš (Hydrothermal mineralization in meteorite impact craters) and A. Paplauskas ( Sedimentology and geophysics of the southern Baltic Basin), and 2 MSc projects by K. Tänavsuu (Sedimentology and architercture of the Baltic Devoniana Basin at Narva time) and T. Kespre ( Mineralogy of the oil-shale ash plateau deposits).
