Preamble

Established in 1971 as a constituent College of University of Delhi, University College of Medical Sciences has attained pre-eminent position as a seat of learning in medical sciences on the map of India as evident from various country-wide surveys of medical colleges by independent agencies. During the year 2010-11, the College made rapid strides in all spheres of medical education, research, patient care and various co-curricular and extra-curricular activities. The College launched new teaching programs such as Diploma Courses in Child Health and Gynecology and Obstetrics and Masters Course in Medical Imaging Technology (Radiography). Besides this, the College witnessed steep rise in enrolment for various Postgraduate Teaching Programs as well as PhD Courses. Despite increase in training capacity in various programs, the College has been able to achieve excellent results in various university examinations. The College held regular interviews for filling up of various teaching and non-teaching posts and departmental promotions.

During the year, several faculty members have received prestigious awards in their specialties and some teachers were conferred off-shore fellowships. The faculty members and students published record number of scientific papers in various reputed Journals and presented their research work at various national and international conferences. The College also witnessed marked increase in the number of research projects funded by various external agencies. Few departments have hosted national conferences. Besides this, a significant progress in augmenting the e-resources in the library and office automation was made.

The Medical Education Unit organized several workshops aimed at improving the teaching - learning skills at undergraduate, postgraduate and senior resident level as well as for faculty development. Besides the regular extra-curricular activities such as cultural feast and sports extravaganza, the College launched Medical Humanities Wing of Medical Education Unit which organized lectures by various luminaries in non-medical fields, photography exhibition, street plays and a presentation in performing arts in collaboration with SPICMACAY. The College also launched its newsletter, ‘Cosmos’ to highlight various activities.

The associated teaching hospital provides advanced tertiary care facilities in various specialties and caters to the healthcare needs of predominantly under-privileged strata of the society in east Delhi. Several ambitious plans for its expansion are at various stages of development such as maternity and childhood block, nursing college, accident and emergency block, diabetes centre, renal centre, academic block, auditorium, etc.


  1. Highlights of major activities and achievements during the period


BIOCHEMISTRY


The department has made significant progress not only in undergraduate and post graduate training but also in medical research. The department successfully organized 23rd Annual conference of Indian Society for Atherosclerosis Research-2010 in November 2010. Several PhD students were bestowed prestigious awards for their significant contribution in atherosclerotic research. Several of our undergraduate students got ICMR fellowship for short term projects and many of our faculty members were bestowed with prestigious awards and orations and were invited for presenting their research papers at renowned international and national conferences. Many of them are also holding eminent posts in various national and international technical committees. Three research projects were successfully completed this year and many new projects were sanctioned by different funding agencies. Patent for the isolation of active compound from Cassia auriculata in DST funded project has been applied for. Most of the faculty members have published research articles in peer-reviewed journal.


PAEDODONTICS AND PREVENTIVE DENTISTRY


In the interest of patient care, a new department of Paedodontics & Preventive Dentistry was created to cater to the dental needs of paediatric population. Seven new dental chairs were installed for general dental treatment purpose. Dental health camp was organized to spread dental awareness among general population. A short training of dental faculty on conscious sedation was conducted by the Head of Department Dr Namita Kalra. Postgraduate course in Paedodontics & Preventive Dentistry is in the advanced stage of development, as the preliminary inspection for the same was conducted by Delhi University in June 2010 and by the Dental Council of India in December 2010. Orthodontics Clinic was started by Dr Harpreet Grewal.


DERMATOLOGY


The department of Dematology & STD bagged ‘Annual Revolving Trophy’ of IADVL, Delhi State Branch for the best performance during the year, 2010. The department undertakes a consolidated program of undergraduate patient oriented and clinical teaching. It has introduced a comprehensive UG teaching program with 5 weeks of clinical training in the various aspects of dermatology including – General Dermatology, Leprosy, sexually transmitted diseases and Minor OT procedures. In addition, daily one hour interactive sessions are conducted on selected topics. The department conducts ward leavings as an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) testing.


FORENSIC MEDICINE


Prof S K verma was the Secretary General for 10th INPALMS congress at Amity University from 25-30th November, 2010. He was also invited by Aligarh Muslim University for Extension Lecture on, “Recent Developments in Forensic Medicine/ Sciences” on 15th April, 2010. Dr Verma was invited as a Resource Person in, “Training Programme for Medical Officers on Holistic and Humane Care of Woman Victim of Domestic Violence” at Directorate of Health Services, Delhi Govt., Delhi, on 8th September, 2010.


MEDICINE


The department took the initiative of ‘Popular Lecture Series’ on issues related to current and common health problems for the benefit of the public. The Department organized 23rd Annual Conference of Indian Society for Atherosclerosis Research and International symposium on Atherosclerosis in UCMS-GTB Hospital in November, 2010. The Haemodialysis Unit was expanded by addition of 5 more haemodialysis machines.


MICROBIOLOGY


The department is performing approximately 40,000 – 45,000 diagnostic tests per month. Processing of samples from the intensive care units of GTB Hospital routinely started on the Automated Blood and Body Fluid System and automated bacterial identification and antibiotic susceptibility testing system installed in the department. The research activities intensified in the molecular biology lab with installation of thermocycler and Real Time PCR.


OBSTETRICS & GYNAECOLOGY


During this year department has successfully organized a surgical workshop on ‘Basic & Advanced Techniques in Non-Descent Vaginal Hysterectomy’ The department has also received many distinctions at national level: RD Pandit Award for best thesis in India has been bagged for 10th time, senior corion award for our faculty from FOGSI, and residents have fetched gold medal for national quiz and for free paper presentations.


ORTHOPAEDICS


Dr. P. Mishra has been appointed as Assistant Editor, Indian Journal of Orthopaedics.


OTORHINOLARYNOGOLOGY


The 2nd International course on Sialendoscopy was well attended and appreciated by all the delegates.


PHARMACOLOGY


All the faculties, resident staff members and postgraduate students of the Department of Pharmacology have contributed significantly to various academic and research activities. Most of the faculties and residents have participated in several National and International scientific meetings and have presented research papers. Dr Pramod K Mediratta and Dr Naresh Khanna were invited as Subject Expert, National Consultation meeting for Revision and Finalization of the National List of essential Medicines. Dr Pramod K Mediratta nominated as Member of CPCSEA as Scientist from outside the Institute at Vallabhbhai Patel Chest Institute, University of Delhi, Delhi and Ethicon Institute of Surgical Institution, 9/43, Kirti Nagar, New Delhi.


PHYSIOLOGY


The department is involved in research with funded projects from CCRYN and ICMR. Currently the department has an ongoing project on “Effect of yoga therapy on coagulation Lipid Profile, Lung diffusion capacity and quality of life in patients with Coronary Artery Disease”. The yoga and lifestyle clinic is catering the several patients of CAD, hypertension and DM. The Department has also started intra-operative monitoring on collaboration with Department of Orthopedics.


PSYCHIATRY


Our Department alongwith others organised 62nd Annual Conference of Indian Psychiatric Society in Delhi. Maryam Safara, a student from Iran, was second candidate to be awarded PhD in Psychiatry by University of Delhi. Dr MS Bhatia was re-elected for fourth term as Editor of Delhi Psychiatric Journal.


RADIOLOGY


Prof. SK Bhargava, Head of the Department, published 6 books during the year and he and other faculty members contributed many Chapters in National and International Books. Deptt. also got 64 slice C.T Scan and started M.Sc Medical Imaging Technology (Radiography) Course. Prof S. K. Bhargava, got Dr.Satya Pal Aggarwal Memorial Oration National Award-2010 by Indian Medical Association (AMS). Dr.Sumeet Bhargava, Sr.Resident in the Department was awarded, (a) Prestigious Fellowship of Indian College of Radiology and imaging (FICRI); (b) Fellowship of IMA College of General Practitioners (FCGP); (c) German Remedies Travelling Fellowship in Radiodiagnosis (2010) by Indian Radiological and Imaging Association (d) Membership of National Academy of Medical Sciences.


SURGERY


Department of Surgery contributed in the organization of Annual Conference of Association of Surgeons of India (ASI) - ASICON held at AIIMS, Delhi on 17-19th Dec 2010 and Dr Sanjay Gupta was the Program Coordinator for Surgical Skills Training at ASICON.

  • Mr Kirtikar Shukla was awarded Best Poster Award in 23rd Annual conference of Indian Society for Atherosclerosis Research 2010 (ISARCON-2010) held at University College of Medical Sciences, Delhi from 13th to 14th Nov 2010.

DERMATOLOGY


  • Dr Ananta Khurana Jain (Senior Resident) presented a paper entitled, “Should anti- oxidants be prescribed in Acne Vulgaris? ” during the Annual meeting of the American Academy of DERMATOLOGY at New Orleans, USA; held during Feb 2011.




  • Dr Neha Kumar (PG 3rd year) – First prize in Young Dermatologists Forum at Annual Cuticon, December 2010, Delhi.
