Collection Summary

Title:

Carnegie Corporation of New York Records

Dates:

1872-2000

Collection ID:

NYCR91-A6

Extent:

875 linear feet (2000 boxes, 339 volumes, 107 microfilm reels, 8 flat folders)

Abstract:

The Carnegie Corporation of New York, which was established by Andrew Carnegie in 1911 “to promote the advancement and diffusion of knowledge and understanding,” is one of the oldest, largest and most influential of American foundations.

Correspondence, memoranda, minutes, annual reports, financial records, photographs and printed materials of board members, officers, staff, grant applicants, and peer institutions document the Corporation’s philanthropic activities and administration. The records also provide insight into the histories of the many institutions founded or endowed by the Corporation, including the more than 2,500 libraries established with Carnegie money. The Corporation’s records include those of other Carnegie philanthropic organizations, including the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Home Trust Company, both of which, for some time, shared staff, officers, and office space with the Corporation.
