Capital Campaign Update: Transporter Room Brief

As we continue to work towards the Lions Eye Bank of Wisconsin Capital Campaign goal of $1 million, there are a multitude of naming opportunities for districts, clubs and individuals. One of the most comprehensive is the Transporter Room. The goal is to receive enough funds to have the “Receiving Room” of the Lions Eye Bank made into the “Transporter Room.”

There are 2,500 transporters plus spouses and two leader dogs that help us fulfill our mission as “Knights of the Blind”. If each transporter would donate $10 we would meet our goal of $25,000. LEBW will take pledges and funds over a five year time frame, with a minimum of $2 per year.

The intent is to have each transporter’s name sent in with your donation so everyone will get recognized.

If you have any questions please call your District Sight Chair or the Lions Eye Bank at 877-233-2354 Ext 8.

Flags Across America

Flags Across America, a Donate Life America initiative, honors and celebrates the hundreds of thousands of donors and recipients whose lives have been affected by organ, eye and tissue donation.

During National Donate Life Month, April, 2010, and throughout the year we encourage every community donor hospital and transplant center, as well as all recovery agencies, to fly Donate Life flags in honor of organ, eye and tissue donors everywhere.

What began as an idea by donation and transplant professional Esther Montoya took off quickly. The concept is to make a very visible and unified statement about the importance of donation and thus reflect the dire need for donors. This initiative is meant to encourage the public to designate donation decisions by registering their wishes in their state donor registries.

“I had this visual of driving down a street or through a city with these donation flags flying all over,” says Montoya. “What a statement that would make!

We are pleased to join together with our partners at community donor hospitals, transplant centers, and donation organizations along with donor family members, waiting patients and recipients to spread the Donate Life message and honor organ, eye and tissue donors.

We hope this nationwide display of flags will make people stop, take notice and take action to sign up to be an organ, eye and tissue donor. Taking the appropriate action to sign up to be a donor in our state could give someone a very precious gift -- Life.

Ways you can celebrate Flags Across America 2010:

Display a Donate Life house flag at your front door

Customize your flag with an individual tribute

Place garden flags around your home or in common areas in your neighborhood

Fly a Donate Life car flag on your vehicle(s) to show your support of donation

Encourage your employer or place of worship to fly a flag and/or place desk flags in key areas of the workplace

Incorporate a virtual flag or web banner into your social networking sites and Web sites.

We Make Life Better Every Day

by WLF President Glen Moegenburg

Here it is - March - with its less than stellar reputation. A Shakespeare tale warned, “Beware the ides of March” and sure enough, Caesar found that all too true. A no-man’s land of not really winter, not quite spring; chilly winds and gray skies. Yuck!

But it’s also true that March comes in like a Lion. That sounds a lot better than the reality, but we’ll take what we can get. There’s a lot of muddy ground to cover, so let’s get started.

By now, all of your clubs have received a letter explaining the WLF Associates Program. The goal is to have a member of every club signed on to the Program before the State Convention. The only qualification is that you have a desire to serve both your club and be an important part of your Foundation. You may be thinking, what’s in it for me? Here are just some features:

Your very own fully tricked-out name badge

a manual chocked full of information about the programs and projects of your Foundation

An invitation to be special guests at the Friday night reception for Program Associates at the State Convention

Regular contact with your Foundation Directors and Staff

Special get-togethers at District and State Conventions and Lions Camp Open Houses

Your involvement in WLF awards to your club and fellow members

And more

Sound like fun? It will be. Sound important? You bet. Do you want to be a part of it? We really hope so.

Speaking of the State Convention, the Thursday activities will, in large part, revolve around your Lions Camp. How about tours, a fantastic dinner, music, great fellowship, and even an adult beverage or two? It will all be there, and more. You can sign-up right on the Convention registration form and be set for a fantastic afternoon and evening. All this and a portion of the event fee will be donated to your Foundation. It just doesn’t get any better.

It has been an honor and joy visiting all the District Conventions held thus far, affording me the opportunity to meet so many generous, dedicated Lions, Lioness, and Leos.

Individually, and as a group, you are amazing. You come into EVERY month like Lions, and that’s a very good thing.
