    Aims & Objectives





This course aims to introduce students to strategies for stimulating creativity, and to the skills and methods associated with writing fiction and poetry. The course will take students through the process of brainstorming, writing, editing, and revising one’s own fiction and poetry, as well as editing and commenting on the fiction and poetry of others. Special emphasis will be paid to the implications of word choice and grammatical structure, and on reading aloud to catch grammatical errors and to improve pronunciation and vocal projection. Through this course, students will grow in confidence in their ability to create a fictional world and share that world with others through their written and oral performance.







    Course content






  • Stimulating creativity (3 hours)

  • Poetry writing techniques and literary devices (12 hours)

  • Creating emotionally real characters through dialogue (3 hours)

  • POV – Voices and degrees of knowing (3 hours)

  • Plot and plot structure -- providing problems without ideal solutions (6 hours)

  • Setting and sensations -- where your characters are located in time, place and reality (3 hours)

  • Editing and revising – getting and giving feedback; word-choice and grammatical structure (6 hours)

  • Reading – sharing your poems and stories with others; practicing enunciation and vocal projection (6 hours)

      1. The instructor will provide concepts relating to poetry-writing and short-story writing and teach students how to use writing exercises to explore these concepts.

      1. Students will also read poems and sections of short stories aloud, and discuss their meaning and the literary devices used.

      1. Students will generate ideas and write their own poems, such as: found poems, communal poems, acrostic poems, list poems, haikus, cinquains, and rhyming poems.

      1. Throughout the poetry unit, students will use a writing journal to develop three of their own poems around a certain theme. Writing journals will also be used in the short story writing portion of the unit to aid in description of character and setting, as well as to journal the discovery process.

      1. Students will show their creative works (i.e. poems and short stories) at different stages of the writing process to their editing partners and receive feedback appropriate to that stage of writing.

      1. Students will record their creative works aloud and then listen to the recording while following their text in order to hear how their words sound and edit accordingly.

      1. The instructor will discuss techniques involved in oral presentations, particularly the issue of pacing, enunciation and vocal projection. Students will practice reading poems and stories and will present their own poems and short stories.

Students will complete two 800-1200 word stories, incorporating elements of character, plot, setting, theme and other concepts taught in the course.

Poetry assignment

Students will write two in-class poems using different styles on a similar theme, paying particular attention to lexical choice and syntactic expression. They will also choose one of the poems they created outside of class and write a 300-word reflection based on their writing journal about the stages of development of their poem.

Students will read their poems and stories aloud, with special focus on enunciation and vocal projection, and then analyze their own performances (based on a recording of their reading) in written reflections of 100-200 words (one reflection for each performance).

Students will provide detailed editing suggestions on a classmate’s manuscript on the first draft, second draft, and third draft of the short story
