This Microsoft® Word document is written in the format required for the abstract and paper for the Fifth International Conference on Structural Health Monitoring of Intelligent Infrastructure to be held December 11-15, 2011 in Cancún, México. We advise you use this document as the template for your abstract and paper, since it contains all necessary formatting and styles.

The abstract should be at least 150 words, but not exceed one page. Please note that the page size in the printed book of abstracts might be scaled to 75%. Page margins should be 2.5 cm for the top margin, and 3.0 cm for the right, top and bottom margins. Use font type Times New Roman with single spaced lines. The title of the paper (style: “Abstract_Title”, font size: 20 points, aligned: right) can use a maximum of two lines. Author’s names (style: “Abstract_Author”, font size: 12.5 points, aligned: right) are written with the initials followed by a period, followed by family names written in full. Each author’s name is followed by the respective affiliation and country. Abstract text (style: “Abstract_Text”, font size: 12.5 points) is justified, and paragraphs are not indented. ABSTRACT: This is an example of a SHMII-5 2011 proceedings paper. Please use a single column format, with the title and author information left justified on the first page. Style guidelines and layout specifications for the paper are given in the text below. The abstract and the first heading (GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS, style: “Heading 1”) should be separated by two blank lines (style: “Paper_Text”), as shown here.

1GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

If accepted, your paper will be included in the SHMII-5 2011 proceedings. Please adhere to the style guidelines below to allow us to maintain uniformity in the final copy of the proceedings.

1.1Submission and deadline

Authors are requested to upload the Microsoft® Word file of the abstract and the full length paper using the corresponding link in the Authors section of the conference website at: http://www.shmii.unam.mx, by June 15, 2011.

1.2Paper length

The maximum paper length is eight pages.

2Style guidelines

2.1General formatting

2.1.1Font, font size, and spacing

Paper text (style: “Paper_Text”) should be Times New Roman, 11 points and single line spacing. Only the following text should be italicized: headings, mathematical parameters (not for log, sin, cos, ln, max., d (in dx), etc), and the titles of journals and books. Do not use bold, except to denote vectors in Mathematics. Do not underline text. Use a 10 point font for text in tables (style: “Table_Text”), figure captions (style: “Figure_Caption”), table captions (style: “Table_Caption”), and references (style: “References”).

2.1.2Margins and indenting

The text should fit exactly into the type area (150  240 mm). For A4 size paper the margin settings are: top: 2.5 cm, bottom: 3.0 cm, left: 3.0 cm, right: 3.0 cm. First lines of paragraphs are not indented. Equations are indented 12 mm (style: “Equation_Text”).

2.1.3Headings

Headings are set flush against the left margin. The spacing before and after headings are defined in the corresponding styles (Heading 1 through 9). Headings are not indented and neither are the first lines of text following the heading.

2.1.4Units

Measurements and results should be reported in SI units only.

2.2Instructions for sections and insertions

2.2.1Paper title, author’s names, and affiliations

The paper title should be in 16 point Times New Roman, left justified (style: “Paper_Title”). The author’s names appear below the title in 11 point Times New Roman (style: “Paper_Author”). The author’s affiliations appear below the author’s name, also left justified, in 10 point Times New Roman (style: “Paper_Affiliation”).

2.2.2Abstract

Each paper should include an abstract of approximately 100-150 words. The entire abstract is justified.

2.2.3Equations

Use the equation editor of the selected word processing program. Number equations consecutively and place the number between parentheses with the tab key at the end of the line (style: “Equation_Text”). Refer to equations by these numbers.

2.2.4Tables

Locate tables close to the first reference to them in the text and number them consecutively. Avoid abbreviations in column headings. Indicate units in the same line or the line immediately below the heading. Use only horizontal borders: one above and one below the column headings and one at the foot of the table. Table text should be Times New Roman, 10 point (style: “Table_Text”). Left align all cell entries and initialize these entries. Place the table caption above the table. Use Times New Roman, 10 point font (style: “Table_Caption”) for the caption. The table caption should end with a period.

2.2.5Figures

Number figures consecutively in the order in which reference is made to them in the text, making no distinction between diagrams and photographs.

Figures should be in grayscale. Photographs should be black and white, with good contrast. Paste figures in the size and location within the text where you want them to appear; use figures with 300 dpi resolution. Do not place figures sideways on a page. If this cannot be avoided, however, no other text (except the figure caption) should appear on that page. Figures should not be centered, but placed against the left margin (style: “Paper_Text"). Do not place text next to a figure. The best place for placing figures is at the top or bottom of a page. Avoid placing text between figures as readers might miss it. Line drawings (as well as photographic reproductions of these) should be in black (not grey) on white. The minimum font size in the figure should be 9 point. The use of a Sans Serif font (Arial, Calibri, etc.) for the notation, dimensions and text within figures is encouraged. Keep figures as simple as possible; avoid excessive notes to enhance clarity.

The figure caption should use the “Figure_Caption” style. Place the caption directly underneath the figure. The figure caption should end with a period.

2.2.6References

In the text, place the authors’ last names without initials and the date of publication in parentheses, e.g. Rabinovich & Frostig (2000) or Teng et al. (2002). At the end of the paper, list all references in alphabetical order, in a separate “References” section. The references should be typed using 10 point font with second and further lines indented by 4.0 mm (style: “References”). If more than one reference by the same author is cited, entries should be chronological.

Boresi, AP, Schmidt, RJ, and Sidebottom, OM. 1993. Advanced Mechanics of Materials, 5th Edition. New York: John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Rabinovich, O and Frostig, Y. 2000. Closed-form higher order analysis of RC beams strengthened with FRP strip. Journal of Composite Construction, ASCE, 4: 65-74.

Teng, JG, Zhang, JW, and Smith, ST. 2002. Interfacial stresses in reinforced concrete beams bonded with a soffit plate: a finite element study. Construction and Building Materials, 16: 1-14.

2.2.7Conclusions

Conclusions should state concisely the most important findings reported in the paper, as well as the author’s views of the practical implications of the results.

3Final checks

Please make sure that the paper looks as this sample conference paper: title at top of first page in 16 point font, all other text in 11 point font with single line spacing, except for 10 point font used for author’s affiliations, text in tables, table/figure captions, and references. Please double check the area of text within margins to be 150 mm wide and 240 mm long.
