8.5. Scientific research and creativity

Participation of the members of the teaching staff in the registered projects (grants of the Scientific Council of Latvia, research financed by the Ministry of Science and Education etc.) are quite active: during the period under discussion several members of the LAP teaching staff have joined there (appendix 9). Significant research is carried out by the Programme Director Prof. E.Ģingulis (is Head of the research project No. 07. 2038 "Interdisciplinary Links in Studies of the Basics of Mathematics, applied Computer Science, Economics and Business in grades 10-12, through solving tasks for optimisation" financed by the Scientific Council of Latvia), by Assoc. Professors A.Līdaka and I.Miķelsone.

Active participation in conferences (E.Ģingulis, A.Līdaka, I.Miķelsone, I.Strazdiņa, O.Zīds, I.Neimane, J.Mihejeva etc.), among publications there are monographs, teaching/learning aids, research papers on teaching methods etc.

Integration of the academic personnel’s research activity into the study process manifests itself as practical implementation of the methods of research activity and conclusions which find reflection in their scientific - methodological publications, i.e., offering corresponding themes for Master students’ papers and acquainting Master students with application of research methods in writing their papers. Individual contribution of the members of the academic staff to the research can be found among the materials published in the LAP “Overview of Research Work in the Liepāja Academy of Pedagogy in 2005”, “Overview of Research Work in the Liepāja Academy of Pedagogy in 2006”.

9. Sources of financing and provision of infrastructure

Management of the study programme is the responsibility of the Faculty of Natural and Social Sciences and the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science.

Provision of infrastructure for the study programme is sufficient for its implementation. Functioning of the study programme and research is financed by the state budget, and the self-income of the LAP and income from research projects. Student credits are available for Master students.

During the course of studies the library and provision of its stocks play a significant role. The library has a free-access reading room and computer reading rooms, computerised lending department, the electronic library catalogue is linked to the integrated system ALISE. The library has subscribed to databases LURSOFT, LETA, NAIS, BSCO, Letonika and others. In future more intensive educational work should be carried out among students and also lecturers, in order to promote usage of all possibilities offered by modern technologies.

For reaching the study aims 6 computer classrooms have been furnished, with the total number of installed 75 IBM PC type computers. Besides available for the use of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science are three video/data projectors and three overhead projectors, which are intensively used both in computer classrooms and in other classrooms. Also 7 computers in the library reading room and 17 computers in the free-access classroom are used by students for independent work.

In each workplace there are also installed operating systems MS Windows Me or MS WindowsXP, as well MS Office97/2000 and other software needed for studies. All computers are connected to the local network (with Windows NT server), which ensures saving students’ independent work and access to other program systems - programming systems Turbo Pascal 7.0, MS Visual Basic 5.0/6.0, database administration systems MS Access, MS SQL Server2000, GRADE, DERIVE, graphic software CorelDraw and others. Contracts have been concluded with the companies Microsoft and Visual Paradigm International, Ltd. concerning usage of all these tools during the study process.

From all workplaces Internet services are available. LAP maintains one of the branches of the Latvia academic network LATNET. For this purpose telecommunication line Liepāja – Rīga has been hired, which at present provides data exchange with the speed 2 Mbiti/sec.

Available for the members of the teaching of the Department are twelve computers, which are used for designing study materials, record-keeping in the Department, for carrying out different kinds of cooperation and research projects and the like. The number of computers is sufficient. In separate cases lecturers make use of the computers in the classrooms or the library.

In the Academy there functions a library available for students, containing literature needed for implementation of the programme. Part of the printed matter related to information technologies, computer sciences and mathematics can be found in the rooms of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, incl. classrooms. The available literature ensures acquisition of all study courses, though separate courses require a higher number of copies of one and the same title, as well as to purchase latest literary editions. Also members of the teaching staff from the Department design their own study aids.

For ensuring E-study courses also virtual study environment VLE Blackboard is used.

In order to improve the study infrastructure it is necessary to constantly follow supplementing the LAP library stocks with study and scientific materials on didactics of mathematics and computer science, as well as with suitable periodicals. In order not to lag behind concerning the equipment of the best purpose-equipped mathematics classrooms in schools, the LAP should also equip one classroom aimed at teaching mathematics and methods of its teaching, installing there a computer and a projector needed for work with the interactive board, as well as facilities for shading the room.
