7.5. Surveys among the graduates and their analysis

There are no graduates as yet (could not have been as yet), because the study programme was launched on 1 September 2006/2007.

7.6. Student participation in the improvement of the study process

Student involvement into the LAP self-government and cultural activities has become more vivid. Stable traditions have formed: Master students’ and students’ scientific readings, seminars on problematic scientific themes and topicalities in Latvia. In spite of organisational difficulties (no financial provision, dissatisfactory cooperation with the printing house etc.), collections of Master’s research papers are published.

  1. Assessment of the academic personnel involved in the programme

8.1. Number of the academic personnel

25 out the 26 members of the teaching staff involved in the study programme are full-time staff members. Only Grobiņa secondary school computer science teacher Mg.paed. Dace Tomsone is not a full-staff member of the LAP, who is a highly evaluated professional in her field: the author of a course book in computer studies for basic school collaborates with ISEC and is Head of the Computer Science Teachers’ Association of Liepāja district.

8.2. Qualification of the academic personnel

Professional and scientific qualification of all academic staff members complies with implementation of the aim and objectives of the study programme.
    1. Doctors of Sciences or Professors

The ratio of Doctors of Sciences involved in the implementation of the study programme is 58 %. 9 Doctors of Pedagogy are involved in the study programme: O.Glikasa, A.Līdaka, I.Neimane, O.Zīds, E.Ģingulis, K.Ģingule, V.Kārkliņa, I.Miķelsone and A.Vaivode, Doctors of Psychology J.Mihejeva and I.Strazdiņa, Doctor of Philosophy Z.Graumanis.

Among the teaching staff providing acquisition of the programme 2 of the lecturers are employed on full-time basis - professors Dr.paed. E.Ģingulis, Dr.paed. O.Zīds and 2 Associated Professors Dr.paed. A.Līdaka and I.Miķelsone. Professors and Docents have scientific degrees appropriate for the specificity of the study programme and the study disciplines taught, all lecturers and assistants have Master’s degrees in the corresponding fields.

10 people from the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, 7 from the Department of Pedagogy, 4 from the Department of Psychology, 3 from the Department of Management Studies, as well as one lecturer from the Departments of Social Sciences and Department of Environmental Sciences each are involved in the implementation of the programme. Next academic year after the choice of the Master’s paper theme each Master’s student will be guaranteed help of a consultant – supervisor of the Master’s paper.

8.4. Selection of the academic personnel, renewal, training and development policy for the coming 6 years

The academic staff teaching in the programme is mainly from the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science constantly improves their qualification in professional further education courses. In August - November 2006 3.2.5.2.activities “Support for technological practice of the academic personnel and professional education pedagogues in enterprises, improvement of teachers’ and academic personnel’s’ pedagogical, professional, technological and information technology competences” within the framework of the project “Programmatūras inženierijas kursu docētāju kompetenču paaugstināšana in compliance with international certification programmes” (VPD1/ESF/PIAA/05/APK/3.2.5.2./0113/0094) Dz.Tomsons, A.Jansone and G.Būmans participated in Microsoft courses in the Baltic Computer Academy. The following courses were covered:

  • Programming ar C# valodu (2124), 40 hours

  • Pamati tīmekļa programmēšanai ar Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 (2543), 24 hours

  • Padziļinātais kurss tīmekļa izstrādāšanā ar Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 (2544), 16 hours

  • Datu piekļuves pamatpaņēmieni ar Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 (2541), 24 hours

  • Padziļinātais kurss datu piekļuves paņēmienos ar Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 (2542), 16 hours

  • Sadalīto programmu izstrādes pamati using Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 (2548), 24 hours

  • Padziļinātais kurss sadalīto programmu izstrādei ar Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 (2549), 24 hours

  • Microsoft Solutions Framework - programmatūras izstrādes projektu vadība (1846), 24 hours

  • Lietotņu drošība (2840), 40 hours

When recruiting new members of the teaching staff for work in the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, their readiness to continue their studies was taken into consideration – Doctorate studies. At present there are three Doctorate students in the Department:

  • lecturer Mg.sc.comp.A.Jansone – University of Latvia, computer sciences;

  • lecturer Mg.paed.D.Žaime – University of Latvia, mathematics;

  • assistant Mg.paed.I.Magazeina – LAP, Pedagogy.

For the year 2007 it is expected that four members of the teaching staff will become Doctorate students:

  • lecturer Mg.math.G.Būmans and assistant Mg.sc.comp.J.Kreitāls – University of Latvia, computer sciences;

  • lecturer Mg.paed.I.Znotiņa and assistant Mg.paed.J.Letinskis – Rīga Technical University, computer technologies.

Not all resources of improving the scientific potential have been exhausted, because the facts that from the lecturers involved in the work with Master students only 58 % have a Doctor’s degree is a comparatively low index. In the present study programme it is mainly due to the fact, that there are no Doctors of Computer Science and Doctors of Pedagogy in the LAP and Liepāja, who have turned to methods of teaching computer science. The situation is expected to be changing in the nearest years because our lecturer A.Jansone is a Doctorate student in Computer Sciences at the University of Latvia. In the year 2007 the following people are going to start their Doctorate studies: G.Būmans in computer sciences – at the University of Latvia; J.Letinskis in information technology – at the Rīga Technical University. It is also expected that after starting the planned common activity of Rīga Technical University, LAP and the Daugavpils University for Doctorate studies “Computer Science in Pedagogy” among higher educational establishments and branches there will be also several people from the LAP willing to join this programme.
