6.2. Surveys among the employers on the graduates’ employment for the coming six-year period



No surveys have been carried out, but information from mass media and databases of the Ministry of Education and Science testify that already now separate schools experience lack of mathematics and computer science teachers, as well as the fact that it is not rare that teachers of these subjects are close to the retirement age and/ or have double work-load.


  1. Students

7.1. Number of students in the study programme


As in the academic year 2006 the study programme enrolled its first students, there are no graduates as yet and we are having only first-year Master’s students.

At present 10 students are involved in the programme, among them 7 with specialisation in mathematical didactics, 3 students with specialisation in didactics of computer science. Such students’ interest in the study programme can be evaluated as satisfactory. It complies with the enrolment limitations: it admits students only after completion of the Bachelor’s programme in Mathematics or Computer Science or completion of an equivalent study programme, and there are not too many people with this type of education, as well as a possibility, desire and/or a need to continue their education as full-time studies. Students’ interest to join exactly the present study programme is also determined by the payment system for the teacher’s work and the prestige of the teaching profession. There is not more than one applicant for the study place. All students come from Liepāja and the nearby districts, besides practically all students are the LAP graduates.

The estimated number of LAP graduates in the Bachelor’s study programme in Mathematics, as well as in Computer Science, for the nearest future will be small; therefore it would be useful to try to involve also mathematics and computer science teachers working in schools into the professional Master’s study programme “Didactics of Mathematics and Computer Science”, the teachers having a teaching qualification, but no Master’s degree as yet.


7.2. The number of students matriculated for the first academic year


Their number is 10.


7.3. Number of graduates


There are no graduates as yet (could not have been as yet), because the study programme was launched on 1 September 2006/2007.


7.4. Surveys among the students and their analysis


In May 2007 a survey was conducted among the students. The survey results show that the Master students are satisfied with the chosen study programme. Also the competence of the teaching staff and their way of teaching are evaluated positively.

Among the most essential students’ suggestions for improving the implementation of the study programme are:

    • a better-considered timetable by differentiating the range of study disciplines for one day;

    • the study assignments should be closer connected with real projects, involving the students in carrying out tasks for projects;

    • to balance the difficulty level of the study disciplines to be acquired with the aim of reaching balance between the studies during the 1st semester and the 2nd semester: it was easier to study in the 1st semester than during the 2nd semester.

A conclusion can be made that the work started by the members of the teaching staff in the given fields should be continued and developed further.

The fact that almost all students have a job is of special significance, 3 of them are involved in jobs not related to their studies. In order to fully complete all the assignments for the teaching practice these three students evidently will have to leave their jobs or start teaching mathematics or computer science next academic year.
