6. Description of the study content and implementation of the second level professional higher education Master’s programme “Didactics of Mathematics and Computer Science”




6.1. Entrance requirements


Academic Bachelor’s degree of Natural Sciences in Mathematics or Computer Science

or

a higher professional education with integrated Bachelor’s standard in either Mathematics or Computer Science or Information Technology.

6.2. Entrance examinations


Report (5-8 pages) on topical issues in didactics of Mathematics or Computer Science.

Interview on the research problem and personal experience in the field.

6.3. Duration of studies


2.5 years

6.4. Value of the programme in credit points


100 CP

6.5. Structure of the programme (compulsory part A, restricted option part B, free choice part C)


  • Value of the study programme – 100 CP, incl.

  • Value of the compulsory part (A) – 42 CP, among them

    • General education course – 10 CP

    • Value of the course in humanities and social sciences – 6 CP

    • Courses developing social
      communicative and organisational – 6 CP

    • Basic theoretical courses in the field – 6 CP

    • Courses in information technologies – 2 CP

    • Latest achievements in the theory and practice in the field – 6 CP;

    • projects and courses in management – 6 CP;

  • Restricted option part (B) – 36 CP, among them

    • Value of professional specialisation courses in the field – 10 CP

    • practice – 26 CP.

  • State examinations – 22 CP, among them

    • Qualification examination in
      methods of teaching mathematics or computer science – 2 CP

    • Writing and defence of the Master’s paper – 20 CP.

6.6. Obtainable degree and qualification


Professional Master in Education and teacher of Mathematics / Computer Science.

6.7. Obtainable diploma of higher education


Diploma of professional Master.

6.8. Requirements for getting the academic degree/professional degree and qualification



The student who has completed the programme, has passed the qualification examination (assessed not lower that 5 satisfactory) and has defended the Master’s paper is awarded the professional Master’s degree and the fifth level qualification.

During the course of their studies students acquire knowledge, develop skills and abilities needed for implementation of educational programmes in accordance with the state standards for basic and secondary education in order to organise and manage study and upbringing activities enabling to reach pedagogical goals, to analyse and assess the obtained students’ knowledge and skills, to select or to make teaching/learning aids needed for the implementation of the study and upbringing process.

The main requirements of the programme are:

    • to complete the basic theoretical courses in educational sciences, general education courses, courses in humanities and social sciences, developing communicative and organisational skills and courses in information technologies;

    • to cover the courses, which reflect the latest theoretical and practical ideas of educational sciences;

    • to do independent research (not less than 20 weeks of full-time load or in the value of 20 credit points) on the chosen sub branch of didactics the level of which complies with the requirements of a scientific publication,

    • to acquire practical working skills of a mathematics or computer science teacher during the course of 2 pedagogical practices (the total value is 26 weeks).

Lectures, practical classes, seminars, laboratory works, individual work, e-study elements, projects, practices.

6.12. List of the structural units (departments, professor groups, laboratories, institutes etc.) involved in the implementation of the programme, indicating their tasks for implementation of the particular programme



5 departments participate in the implementation of the programme.

  1. Department of Mathematics and Computer Science provides teaching courses in methods of teaching mathematics and computer sciences, courses in information technologies as well as acquisition of the study course “Methodology and Data Processing in Educational Research”, consult/supervise Master’s papers and pedagogical practices.

  2. Academic staff of the Department of Pedagogy and Psychology provides acquisition of basic educational sciences and of latest theoretical and practical ideas.

  3. The Department of Environmental Sciences supervises the study course “Environmental and Health Education”.

  4. Academic staff members of the Department of Social Sciences take care about acquisition of the philosophy course.

  5. The Department of Management Studies provides acquisition of the courses in basics of economics and project management.

Two research institutes of the LAP participate in the implementation of the programme:

  1. The LAP Institute of Mathematical Sciences and Information Technologies with the help of ESF projects for ensuring functioning of pupils’ Mathematics contests at the LAP and activities of the Young Scientists’ School, planning also involvement of Master’s students and their research.

  2. The Institute of Education of the LAP as a disseminator of the latest scientific ideas with the help of their researchers who ensure acquisition of the Master’s courses.

Laboratories, from among them Information technology service laboratory and different computer laboratories play a significant role in ensuring the study process, which provide the needed technical equipment for studies. The LAP Distance Learning Centre ensures acquisition of the courses in “E-studies Didactics” and designing the course project.

6.13. Characterisation of the auxiliary staff indicating their tasks




From among the auxiliary staff – first of all computer technologies engineers working in the computer laboratories are involved in the implementation of the study programme, they maintain the technical condition for operating the computer and peripheral devices and install the required computer programmes for acquisition of a particular study course, as well as consult the members of the teaching staff, students and other employees of the LAP on understanding and practical usage of the computer and peripheral devices in practice. Secondly, the LAP secretary, clerks of the Personnel Department and Dean’s Office help students in getting different references for receiving study credits and with other needs. The necessary information concerning inner matters of the LAP is available at the LAP Information and Public Relations Department (ISAD), but on issues concerning international collaboration – in the LAP Foreign Relations Department.

6.14. Characterisation of the material basis/resources


For implementation of the programme five computer classrooms have been equipped, as well as other classrooms where audio video equipment, different projectors are available. Available for students’ use is the library, the stocks of which are constantly supplemented with the required literature.

The state allotted subsidy from the total income for the implementation of the study programme

The costs of studies for one full-time student of the professional Master’s study programme from the state budget for the academic year 2007 / 2008 have been calculated in compliance with the Regulations No.994 of 12.12.2006 of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Latvia “Procedure of Financing Higher Education Institutions from the State Budget”.

Tb – basic costs of the study place (in 2007 1057.33 Ls; in 2008 1267.20 Ls);

1.5 – coefficient for the Master’s study programme;

ki – coefficient of the study course cost conformable with the thematic field of education (the coefficient value determined by the Ministry of Science and Education for the field of teacher education and educational science in 2007 - 1.31; in 2008 1.396);

145.50 – costs of ensuring one study place social insurance (Ls) per year for Master study programmes (according to Protocol on Mutual Agreement (23 February 2007) of contract No-23/14 between the Ministry of Education and Science and the Liepāja Academy of Pedagogy (14 February 2002).

Cost of the study programme per one state-financed student

The state subsidy from the total income for implementing the study programme per one student (2607.06 Ls/ per student) can also be considered as costs of this study programme per one state-financed student in the academic year 2007/2008.


Cost of the study programme per one fee-paying student

For one fee-paying student of full-time professional Master’s study programme costs per the academic year 2007/ 2008 have been calculated in accordance with the regulations No.994 “Procedure of Financing Higher Education Establishments from the State Budget” of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Latvia on 12.12.2006.

Study costs

The fee for the study programme for the academic year 2007 / 2008 for full-time studies is 840 Ls / per year. Study fees have been fixed in compliance with:

  • the basic cost of a study place for the year 2007 defined in the Regulations No.994 of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Latvia 12.12.2006 “Procedure of Financing Higher Education Institutions from the State Budget”, optimal value of the coefficient of the cost conformable with the thematic field, values of the study cost coefficient for Master’s study programmes;

  • Decision of the Liepāja Academy of Pedagogy Senate “On the Principles of Determining Study Costs at the LAP”, confirmed on 26 February 2007.

In order to approach the tuition fee to the actual costs of the study programme, the study fee paid by the 1st year students is annually raised in conformity with the decision of the Senate of the Liepāja Academy of Pedagogy “On the Principles of Defining Study Fee at the LAP”, confirmed on 26 February 2007.
