Description of the study programme


The study programme consists of 2 parts: compulsory part (A- 42 CP) and restricted option part (B - 58 CP).

  1. Compulsory part (A) (42 CP) – these are basic theoretical courses in the field, general education, humanities courses and courses in social sciences, information technologies, courses in the latest achievements in the theory and practice in the field, courses developing social, communicative and organisational skills. The following courses are studied: philosophy, basic knowledge of economics, project management, general pedagogy, didactics, theory of upbringing, pedagogical technologies, methodology and data processing in educational research, environmental and health education, general psychology, developmental psychology, pedagogical psychology, communication psychology, modern information technologies in education, designing educational software (Visual Basic).

  2. Restricted option part (B) (58 CP) – these are compulsory courses, which ere envisaged for broader education of students and for development of their professional skills and abilities meeting the requirements of the chosen profession – “A Mathematics Teacher” or “A Teacher of Computer Science”, pedagogical practice and qualification examination, writing a Master’s paper and its defence. Scientific basis of the school mathematics (or computer science) course, methods of teaching mathematics (or computer science), organisation of the study environment in computer science (only for computer science teachers).

Theoretical courses are completed in the first two years of studies. During the second year of studies practice is planned – during the first semester in basic school, but during the second semester in secondary school. At the end of the second academic year students take a qualification examination in methods of teaching mathematics or computer science. The third academic year is envisaged for writing the Master’s paper and its defence.

Professional Master’s study programme “Didactics of Mathematics and Computer Science” was licensed on 11 May 2006 (licence No. 04043-42). During the self-assessment period the most essential changes in the study programme are connected with specification of the content of separate study courses, harmonising the independent assignments for their acquisition, providing single logical contiguity and succession between different study courses.

Professional Master’s degree and the fifth level qualification is awarded to the student, who has successfully completed all the study courses included in the study programme, as well fulfilled tasks of the practice, passed the qualification examination with a grade not lower than 5 "satisfactory" and has defended the Master’s paper.

During the course of studies the students acquire knowledge, master skills and abilities needed for implementation of the educational programme in compliance with the state standards for basic and secondary education, for organisation and management of teaching/learning and upbringing activities, enabling to reach educational goals, for analysis and assessment of the learners’ knowledge and skills, and selection and creation of study materials needed for implementation of the teaching/learning and upbringing process.

Future mathematics teachers study disciplines, closely linked with mathematical didactics, future teachers of computer sciences – analogical courses related in computer science didactics. Depending on the field of specialisation – either didactics of mathematics or computer science – there are also requirements for the pedagogical practices, the qualification examination, as well as themes for the Master’s paper.

  1. System of assessment


Assessment of the students’ knowledge is a continuous process during the whole semester on the basis of their independent assignments and tests, as well as twice a year, passing credit tests and examinations. During the semester each course envisages several independent assignments:

  • practical and laboratory works, which are handed in for the lecturer to correct and are quite often discussed and analysed in detail together with the lecturer;

  • tests, that give the lecturer an opportunity to follow how the students are making progress during the semester when studying the course;

  • reports which are defended in front of the students.

At the end of each course students sit for a written or oral examination or a credit test. In some courses, during which both lectures and laboratory works are planned, students take both a credit test and an examination. Assessment is made in a ten-point scale or with the help of a credit test. The lowest pass mark is 4 points (“almost satisfactory”).
