1.Aims and objectives of the study programme


The aim of the second level Professional Higher Education Master Study Programme “Didactics of Mathematics and Computer Science” is to educate high qualification specialists for professional activity in the field of education with specialisation in teaching mathematics or computer science. It complies with the mission and goals defined by the LAP Satversme and the strategic plan of the LAP development for the years 2005-2010 – to create opportunities for obtaining higher education, for in-service training and further education, enabling for purposeful activity in the interests of the state and people of Latvia in the fields of education, culture, science etc. in the dynamic conditions of democracy, communication, competitiveness, information and culture.

The objectives of the professional Master’s study programme “Didactics of Mathematics and Computer Science” are as follows:

  1. to create opportunities for students to acquire knowledge and master practical skills, enabling to teach mathematics (or computer science) in the diversified secondary education programmes in compliance with the Teacher’s Professional Standard confirmed by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Latvia, standards and guidelines confirmed by ISEC in studies of mathematics or computer science;

  2. to create conditions, so that students could acquire the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed for organising out-of-class and out-of-school activities in mathematics or computer sciences;

  3. to provide gaining experience of creative work and research work in the field of mathematics or computer science methodology;

  4. to create opportunities for developing sufficiently good and proper level of one’s competence in creative tackling problems of organising processes in methodology, general pedagogy, psychology and education, in urgent cases carrying out adequate applied research.



  1. Organisation of the study programme


Professional Master’s study programme “Didactics of Mathematics and Computer Science” is being implemented by the Faculty of Natural and Social Sciences of the LAP, with involvement of lecturers from 6 departments for teaching students, i.e. Departments Pedagogy, Psychology, Mathematics and Computer Sciences, Social sciences, as well as academic staff of the Department of Management Studies and Environmental Sciences.

The programme has been worked out in compliance with the Education Act, Higher Education Act, Professional Education Act, Regulations No.481 “Requirements of the Second Level Higher Education Standard” of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Latvia, as well as in compliance with Teacher’s Professional Standard (PS0238). The graduates are awarded Professional Master’s degree in Didactics of Mathematics or Computer Science and a qualification Teacher with the right to teach mathematics or computer science basic and secondary education establishments.

Form of studies is full-time studies. The procedure of the study process and the changes within the study programmes (in case they are needed) are worked out and confirmed at the following levels of the inner structure of the LAP:

  1. groups of lecturers from the corresponding departments;

  2. Director of the study programme;

  3. Council of the study programme;

  4. Council of the Faculty of Education

  5. Study Council of the LAP;

  6. LAP Senate.

The documents regulating the functioning of the programme are available from the programme Director, Head of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, in the Dean’s office of the Educational Department and in the LAP Department of Studies.

Matriculation requirements. Matriculation for the professional Master’s study programme “Professional Master of Pedagogy, a Teacher of Mathematics (or computer science)” is organised in accordance with the LAP regulations for entrance requirements, which have been designed in compliance with the Higher Education Act, requirements of the Ministry of Science and Education and the LAP Satversmes.

For professional Master’s study programme “Professional Master of Pedagogy, Teacher of Mathematics (or Computer Sciences)” the following persons can be matriculated:

  1. Persons, who have at least a Bachelor’s degree or higher education in Mathematics (Computer Science) or comparable to it or in a thematic field comparable to it.

  2. Persons, having professional education of a mathematics (computer science) teacher, obtained after completing at least a four-year study course.

Student co-participation in the organisation of the study process manifests itself when Director of the study programme meets with the students at an earlier planned time for tackling organisational issues.

At least once during the academic year a survey among students is conducted. Analysis of the results, making their suggestions for improving the study process: planning of the session, for drawing up the timetable, for enriching the library stocks in the context of their Master research, for usage of information and communication technologies during the study process, for optimisation of organisation of studies etc. The constructive suggestions expressed in the questionnaires have been evaluated, analysed and included in the study programme development plan.
